Exclusive Interview | Jitendra Kumar, Outlets Manager, NOVOTEL Vijaywada Varun

Editor: Tell us about your journey. How did it all start?

Well, I think in India it all starts from once childhood, it's taught to us "Atithi Devo Bhava"

For me it started the same way, I learned the basics of service at home & learned my first culinary delights from my mother. I was growing up in an era where culinary shows were raising the TV TRPs and that's when I first decided that I want to be in Hospitality, My Obvious choice for college was IHM and in my training, I was part of a food festival and engaged into many activities this was the turning point where I knew I want to be a Director of Food& Beverage someday and once you know the goal mother nature and people around you helps you to reach there.

Editor: What do you think it takes to succeed in this industry?

CONSISTENCY! Yes, and I have no second thought about it. In our industry, every single day is different and full of evolving challenges.  We have to deal with them with consistent behavior and passion for our work.

You have to be hardworking, well-groomed, knowledgeable, trending, and hospitable each day you walk into this beautiful building called Hotel. So yes CONSISTENCY is the key to success.

Editor: What are the attributes you look for while selecting or hiring?  If someone wants to work with you, what should they do?

Attitude towards work and passion towards guest services.  I can develop techniques in a few months but it takes years to develop a good attitude, I would also like to gaze at his or her career path if talent is consistent or not.

Editor: What advice would you give to a young, aspiring hotelier for their internship?

We have a generation that is restless and want results before they can blink an eye. They must learn and groom themselves into hoteliers,  One should understand which stream suits them the most. I always tell them I decided about my career when I was a trainee.

Editor: What are some of the trends you see impacting the hospitality industry?

Post-Covid 19, industry has seen a complete shift of business trends, work from home is a trend which has an adverse effect on our industry, on other hand, we also see a rise in weekend staycations. Business is now more dependent on the local guest database than travelers or transits in many places. People have become more health and hygiene conscious than before so organics and healthy foods are trending.

Editor: Two things you would like to change in the industry.

One would be Glorification of long working hours  And other would-be Taxations and government taxes are too high. I really think by reducing taxes government can promote travel culture in India.

Editor: What is your favorite interview question and why?

So, my favorite question to ask is, "Do you have any questions for me? Because the answer will give me an insight into the person I am interviewing. I like curious people this shows they want to learn.
