Airbnb signs an MoU with the Ministry of Tourism to showcase India’s heritage stays and promote cultural tourism

June 2023: Airbnb today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, to promote India as a most sought-after high-potential tourism destination and shine a spotlight on its rich cultural heritage.

 

The MoU was signed in the presence of Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Tourism Minister, Government of India, Ms. V. Vidyavathi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Shri Rakesh Kumar Verma, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, and Amanpreet Bajaj, General Manager, Airbnb India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, aims to underscore the cultural significance of India's heritage properties and encourage travelers to embark on immersive journeys through the country's diverse heritage.

At the heart of this partnership lies the launch of the exclusive ‘Soul of India’ microsite that showcases an array of heritage stays across the country. These heritage properties, steeped in history and architectural brilliance, offer an authentic glimpse into India’s rich cultural tapestry. Additionally, Airbnb will also offer support to Hosts in untapped tourist areas, assist them in promoting their homestays, build host capacity, and foster a culture of responsible hosting.

This year-long partnership symbolizes the shared commitment of both Airbnb and the Ministry of Tourism to enhance India's standing in the global tourism market through promotional strategies and campaigns.

Key elements of the MoU include:

  • Destination Promotion - The Ministry of Tourism and Airbnb will work together on positioning India as a sought-after destination for cultural and heritage tourism, leveraging targeted domestic and international campaigns that showcase the distinctive heritage stays available throughout the country.

  • ‘Soul of India’ Microsite - Airbnb will launch a dedicated ‘Soul of India’ microsite to promote heritage homes across India and share captivating stories behind the heritage properties and the destinations, with a goal to inspire visitors to embark on unique cultural adventures and immerse themselves in the unparalleled essence of India.

  • Capacity Building and Insights - Airbnb will endeavor to train hospitality micro-entrepreneurs in emerging destinations that are part of the Ministry's flagship scheme. Airbnb will also share travel and homestay insights with the Ministry of Tourism for informed responsible tourism policies and training requirements.

Ministry of Tourism in its ongoing efforts to strengthen the Hospitality & Tourism Industry especially in the times of the pandemic, has signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MakeMyTrip (India) Private Limited and Ibibo Group Private Limited on 17.08.2021. Ministry of Tourism has already signed MoUs with Easy my Trip, Clear trip and Yatra.com.

The primary objective of this MoU is to provide an extensive visibility to accommodation units, which have self-certified themselves on SAATHI (System for Assessment, Awareness & Training for the Hospitality Industry) on the OTA platform. The MoU also outlines both parties to encourage Units to register on NIDHI and thereby on SAATHI and encourage local tourism Industry with appropriate safeguards for curbing spread of COVID-19. The idea is also to gather more information on accommodation units in order to gain actionable insights & designing evidence based & targeted policy measures and to promote safe, honourable and sustainable tourism.

The event was organized under the arrangement between Ministry of Tourism and Quality Council of India (QCI) for implementing measures for strengthening the Indian Hospitality & Tourism Industry.

The signing MoU was done in the presence of Shri Rakesh Kumar Verma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Shri Sanjay Singh, Deputy Director General (H&R), Ministry of Tourism, Dr. A Raj, Senior Director, QCI, Shri Mohit Singh, Deputy Director, QCI, Dr. Mahavir Prasad Tiwari, Deputy Director, QCI, Shri. Abhishek Logani, Chief Business Officer-Hotels, MakeMyTrip (India) Private Limited & Ibibo Group Private Limited and Shri. Venkatesh Ramakrishna, SVP – Corporate Affairs, MakeMyTrip (India) Private Limited & Ibibo Group Private Limited.

The Ministry of Tourism and MakeMyTrip (India) Private Limited & Ibibo Group Private Limited will endeavour to take necessary steps to encourage and promote strategic and technical co-operation in the Indian hospitality & tourism sector for overall benefit in the identified areas through the MoU. It is expected, that, in the future more OTAs will come forward for signing such MOUs in order to strengthen the Hospitality & Tourism Industry of India.

MoT conducts 'Dekho Apna Desh' webinar on ‘Secrets and Delights of Indian cuisine’

In partnership with the National e-Governance Department, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Tourism recently conducted Dekho Apna Desh Webinar series called 'Secrets and Delights of Indian Cuisine.' Presented by Dr. Aruna Sharma, retired IAS officer of MP Cadre batch 1982, the webinar was held to discuss the significance of Indian cuisine. She highlighted the role of immunity-boosting locally grown food grains and vegetables.

India is a melting pot of different cultures as it incorporates various regional dishes, cooking styles, locally available unique spices, grains, vegetables, and fruits.   Indian cuisine provides a balance of taste and health.

With the landscape, dialect, culture, and food habits changing every few kilometres, the country offers a plethora of food varying in cooking styles across different regions. This aspect reflects in forms of food available at homes, streets, or fine dining venues in India.

The 'Dekho Apna Desh' series captured this diversity to reverberate 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.'

Rupinder Brar, Additional Director General, concluded the webinar by mentioning the variety of cuisines, food trails accessible in India. She further highlighted the Ministry of Tourism's initiative called Incredible India Tourist Facilitator (IITF) Certification. This certification encourages the citizens of India to participate in the Tourism Industry actively.

Maldives brings forward reopening date to July

"We are planning to reopen our borders for visitors in July 2020," read an official statement issued by the Ministry of Tourism on May 30.

To ensure safety, the government says it is issuing a "Safe Tourism License" to accredit tourist facilities that abide by government legislation and specific safety requirements like having a certified medic on call and holding an "adequate stock" of personal protection equipment.

Travelers will also need to take steps. They'll be required to present a medical certificate confirming proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken at least 14 days before they arrive.
