Marriott International Signs Agreement to Bring W Hotels to Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah

Marriott International, Inc., today announced it has signed an agreement with Dalands Holding in collaboration with Marjan, the master-developer of freehold properties in Ras Al Khaimah, to bring W Hotels to Al Marjan Island. Slated to open in Q1 2027, W Al Marjan Island is anticipated to mark W Hotels first property in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah bringing bold design, outstanding service and always-on programming. 

Al Marjan Island is Marjan’s flagship archipelago island off the coast of the city set against the picturesque backdrop of the Arabian Peninsula and enclosed by the Yanas and Jais Mountains. A thriving leisure destination, the island attracts global travellers to its luxurious waterfront living and white sandy beaches and offers an array of activities and water sports. The island is also in close proximity to Ras Al Khaimah’s cultural, heritage and adventure attractions.

The property is also expected to offer three restaurants and retail space.

Located within The Ribbon and designed by acclaimed Australian architects, Hassell, W Sydney rises above the roadways to hug Darling Harbour. Its exceptional interiors are designed by London-based Bowler James Brindley, who conceived W Sydney through the authenticity of the city’s history, spirit, and lore; from the marine-inspired rooms and suites to the distinctive restaurant and bars. At the heart of the hotel’s design story is ‘the larrikin,’ a quintessentially Australian character whose strong spirit informs and inspires the hotel’s luxe yet unconventional interiors.

From the moment guests step past the W sign, inspired by the Australian flower Waratah, they are on a design-led journey. The copper-clad entry pays homage to subterranean Sydney and its disused railway tunnels, and an illuminated vertical promenade sweeps guests up into Living Room, a vivid blue space that reinvents the conventions of a traditional lobby by turning it into a social hub. Embracing a ‘Future Noir’ theme, Living Room is punctuated by an electric blue circular bar and nest-like seating that reference the Australian Bowerbird, a larrikin of the bird world. W Sydney’s 588 guestrooms, including 162 exceptional suites, draw inspiration from the hotel’s harbourside location and nearby beaches, exuding marine-chic in their nautical white and navy-blue palette and undulating walls that echo the sails of yachts in the marina below. Bathrooms are rendered in deep oceanic blue and walk-in wardrobes feature a burst of graphic, inflorescent red and pink Waratah flowers for a playful touch.

Cuisine Scene

Across all its spaces, W Sydney channels the boundless energy of the Harbour City and its culture of inclusivity with a tuned-in, curious attitude, amplified through always-on programming. Electrifying the city’s culinary and nightlife scenes, W Sydney brings four new dining and bar venues across three exciting levels. BTWN embraces its unique setting adjacent to the flyover, drawing on its urban surroundings and weaving the iconography of night food markets into its spaces. Leading the culinary adventures at BTWN is Head Chef Chris Dodd, an alumnus of Aria and Blue Door, whose menus hero the produce of New South Wales. Just as other restaurants in town are winding down, BTWN comes alive with 2AM: dessertbar, a late-night hotspot created in collaboration with Singaporean dessert guru Janice Wong. Living Room’s menus embrace the hotel’s location on the edge of Asiatown with a focus on Sake and Soju, as well as Asian small bites. 29/30 is a two-level bar with uninterrupted harbour views, the perfect place to celebrate Sydney. Switching the mood, AWAY Spa is an oasis of concrete calm designed to leave guests feeling rested and recharged in an idiosyncratic but nevertheless deeply restorative space. The five treatment rooms and connecting spaces are gently enclosed by the meditative, geometric art of Bradley Eastman (aka Beastman). In addition to unique circular pods for beauty treatments, the spa features a bar for those who like to socialize while they decompress. The hotel’s FIT Gym is complete with Technogym equipment, whereas WET Deck is a place to chill poolside with stellar views of Darling Harbour. ICONiQ Whisky Rockets to 1 million cases, a year from launch

Allied Blenders and Distillers makes a strong shift to prestige and above, higher margin segments. 

Chennai, October 2023:  Allied Blenders and Distillers (ABD) confirmed that its recent launch of ICONiQ Whisky has soared past the 1 million (10 lakh) cases milestone in September 2023, since launch in September 2022; despite being available so far only in states of North and East India. Large states for the segment, with significant profit pools like Maharashtra and Telangana, have joined the journey with market launches in the past few weeks.  

ICONiQ Whisky was launched state by state, in a planned, sequenced stagger, in most parts of East and North India from September 2022. It’s blend of imported Scotch malts aged in bourbon oak casks, with matured malts and Indian grain spirits has gained strong consumer equity in markets it has been introduced.  These 1 million cases deliver on ABD setting pace to transit to a higher value portfolio in prestige and above segments.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a stunning archipelago located in the Bay of Bengal, off the eastern coast of India. It consists of a total of 572 islands, out of which only a few are inhabited. The islands are known for their pristine white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and lush greenery. The rich biodiversity of islands includes exotic marine life, coral reefs, and dense forests. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts, offering activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and trekking. The islands also have a rich history, with remnants of colonial-era buildings and the infamous Cellular Jail, known for its role in India’s struggle for independence. The local culture of the islands is a blend of indigenous tribes and settlers from various parts of India, making it a unique cultural experience.

COMMON INGREDIENTS USED IN THE COOKING ON THESE ISLANDS:

The cuisine of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is influenced by the local tribal communities and the settlers from different parts of India. Common ingredients used in cooking include seafood like fish, crabs, and prawns, as well as coconut, rice, and various tropical fruits and vegetables. HERE ARE A FEW RECIPES FROM THE ISLANDS OF ANDAMAN & NICOBAR:

RECIPE-1] CHILLI MASALA FISH CURRY 

Ingredients:

500 grams fish, cut into small pieces

2 onions, finely chopped

 3 tomatoes, pureed

 2 green chilies, slit

 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste

 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

 1 tablespoon red chili powder

1 tablespoon coriander powder

1 teaspoon cumin powder

1 teaspoon garam masala

Salt to taste

2 tablespoons oil

Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

METHOD:

1. Heat oil in a pan or kadai over medium heat.

2. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

3. Add ginger-garlic paste and slit green chilies. Cook for a minute until the raw smell disappears.

4. Add the pureed tomatoes and cook until the oil separates from the masala.

5. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well.

6. Add the chicken or fish pieces to the masala and coat them evenly. Cook for a few minutes.

7. Add water as needed to adjust the consistency of the curry.

8. Cover the pan and simmer until the chicken or fish is cooked through and tender.

9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

10. Serve the Chilli Curry hot with steamed rice or roti.




RECIPE-2] ISLAND STYLE PRAWN COCONUT CURRY

Ingredients:

12-15 no medium prawns

1/2 cup tamarind paste

6-7 black peppercorns

2 tsp garlic paste

2 tsp ginger paste

1 tsp cumin seeds

½ tsp mustard seeds

4-5 garlic cloves, chopped

1 tsp red chilli powder

4 tbsp refined oil

1 cup onions, chopped

1 lemon for its juice.

1 tbsp green chillies, chopped

½ tsp turmeric

1 cup coconut milk

2 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped

Salt

Water

Method: 

1.Deshell and devein the prawns, wash them well.

2.Marinate the prawns with a mixture of ginger paste, garlic paste, red chilli powder, salt and lemon juice.

3.Heat refined oil in a pan, add chopped garlic and saute. Add black peppercorns, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and stir.

4.Then add onions, green chillies, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and saute well.

5.Now add tamarind paste, salt and the prawns to the curry. Stir well.

6.Add coconut milk. Garnish with the coriander leaves and serve hot.





RECIPE- 3] FISHY FARE ALL THE WAY 

Ingredients:

1.5kg fish fillets Basa

 Salt to taste

1 ½ tsp ground turmeric

6 tbsp of vegetable oil, or mustard oil

1 large white onion, finely grated

4 garlic cloves, crushed

1 knob of ginger, 2.5cm long, peeled and crushed to a paste

1 tbsp of ground coriander

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp chilli powder

3 tbsp of tomato purée

200g of tomatoes, cut into 2.5cm cubes

3-4 cups warm water for the gravy.

½ tsp sugar to balance the flavours.

Method:

1.Cut the fish into 12 equal portions. Mix 1 tsp of the salt and 1 tsp of the ground turmeric, rub on all sides of the fish and set aside for 30 minutes

2.In a shallow saucepan, heat 5 tbsp of the oil over a medium-high heat. If you are using mustard oil, heat until it is smoking hot – this removes the bitter pungency of the oil – then bring it down to a medium-high heat. Add the fish to the pan and fry to seal each piece, but do not let the fillets cook through. Remove from the pan to a plate and set aside

3.Add the onion, garlic and ginger to the pan and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes over a medium-high heat. If the paste is burning or sticking to the base of the pan, add a splash of water. Add the remaining salt and ground turmeric, followed by the ground coriander, ground cumin, chilli powder, tomato purée and diced tomatoes. Pour in the warm water and cook for 5 minutes. Keeping the pan on a medium-high heat, let the liquid reduce for 15 minutes or until the oil comes to the surface and seeps to the sides of the pan

4. Gently return the fish fillets to the pan and cover with the sauce, ensuring all sides of each fillet are cooking evenly. If possible, cook the fish fillets in a single layer in the pan as this will prevent them from breaking up into flakes. Lower the heat, add the sugar and cook, covered, until the fillets are cooked through – this should take no longer than 5 minutes.

5. To serve, garnish the fish with whole green chillies and sprigs of fresh coriander leaves.

RECIPE- 4] MARINATED BAKED FISH FARE

Ingredients

300 grams salmon fish

For Marination

8 cloves garlic

2 handful coriander leaves

1 piece ginger

2 tablespoon lime juice

1 tablespoon grated lime zest

1 tablespoon red chilli powder

½ teaspoon cumin powder

½ tablespoon garam masala powder

Salt as required

1 cup oil

3 tablespoon gram flour (besan)

120 grams hung curd

METHOD:

1. Prepare A Special Ginger-Garlic Paste, to begin with wash and clean the fish. Next, make a fine paste with half of the vegetable oil, garlic, coriander, ginger, red chilli powder, cumin powder, garam masala, lime juice and zest, and salt.

2. Make Gram Flour Paste, heat the oil in a pan and add the gram flour, stir to make a paste, and cook for about a minute till fragrant and lightly colored.

3. Add Spice Paste, Yoghurt & Marination Ingredients Add the mixture to the spice paste and combine with the yoghurt. Mix well all the ingredients for the marinade.

5. Marinate the Fish Cubes & Preheat the Oven. Gently rub the marinade over the fish pieces and marinate for an hour. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius and spread out the marinated fish in a baking dish.

6. Bake For 10-15 Minutes, Bake the tandoori fish for 10-15 minutes on the top rack turning the fish pieces once. Baste the fish pieces once or twice during cooking with butter. Serve hot with chutney or sauce.

RECIPE- 5] DESI BREAD IN THE BASKET

INGREDIENTS 

1 cup Maida

1 tablespoon olive oil 

For Seasoning

Salt as required

For Dough

½ teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon sugar

2 teaspoon refined oil

2 tablespoon yoghurts (curd)

2 tablespoon lukewarm milk

METHOD:

1. Knead the Dough for The Kulcha, to prepare the dough, take a large bowl and sieve the flour in it. Add baking powder, baking soda, curd and refined oil in it. Add sugar and salt in the flour and mix it well with your fingers. Add warm milk in flour and knead the mixture to prepare a firm dough. Cover it with a damp cloth and keep it aside.

2.Now take the dough and divide it into two equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten the ball using a rolling pin. Place a spoonful of aloo filling in the centre of the flatten dough and close the kulcha well. Sprinkle some flour over it and roll it again into a paratha.

3.Toast the Kulcha On Both Side, Take a non-stick pan, add olive oil and heat it over medium flame. When oil bubbles start to rise, gently place the kulcha in the pan and cook for a minute. Flip the kulcha and cook the other side till both sides turn crispy and golden brown in colour. Once done, serve hot with Amritsari Chole.



RECIPE- 6] COCO NAKA SWEET BON BONS

Ingredients:

grated coconut- 1/ ½ cup.

Cardamom powder- 1/2 tsp

Condensed milk- 3/4 cup

Ghee- 1 tbsp

dessicated coconut- 1 /½ cup

Method.

1.In a pan, add ghee add grated coconut and saute on low flame

2.Add condensed milk, cardamom powder, mix well

3.Stir continuously

4.Pour the mixture in a big bowl, make small balls

5.Roll balls in the desiccated coconut

6. Serve it

Signed under a franchise agreement with Highgate Portugal, the hotel is expected to open in 2025 offering 149 guest rooms, more than 1,300 m2 of meeting space and multiple restaurants and bars. The hotel will also offer a rounded wellness experience, with indoor and outdoor pools, a gym and a full-service spa. The interior design concept takes its inspiration from the area’s natural and cultural surroundings, including vibrant orange groves, azueljos (tin-glazed tileworks) and ceramics.

The southernmost area of the country, the Algarve is a major Portuguese tourist destination thanks to its sunny climate, world renowned beaches and natural beauty. The beachfront hotel is located steps from Sao Rafael beach, one of the top ten beaches in the Algarve framed by limestone cliffs, and a short distance from Albufeira - a lively and historic resort town on the coastline with whitewashed houses, 18th century churches, shops and bars.

Workshop on Online Safety, Wellbeing and Digital Resilience organized at IHM Ranchi

42% of students surveyed by FLAIR are moderately addicted to internet usage, 25% addicted to social media

 In collaboration with FLAIR (Forum for Learning and Action with Innovation and Rigour) and SHICAA (safe and Healthy Internet for Children and Adolescents Alliance) organized a three-day workshop on “Online Safety, well-being, and Digital Resilience” at the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition (IHM), Brambe, Ranchi. Three-day workshops took place on 29th September, 6th October, and 13th October 2023.

The workshop was organized in view of increased digital usage and its impact on mental health. On 29.09.2023, the workshop was organized by the welcome address by Dr. Alok Aswal, Head of Department, IHM followed by the introduction to the seminar and workshop series by Dr. Bhupesh Kumar, Principal. Mr. Ajay Sinha, executive director of FLAIR, talked about the reinforcement of addictive behavior towards the internet and how hormones namely dopamine, serotonin and melatonin play key roles in it. Ajay highlighted that dysfunctional behavior and hormones correspondingly affect sleep and result in lower productivity, poor academic performance, procrastination, and less socialization with the immediate surroundings. He also spoke about “legal and safety measures” and how it affects our mental health at large. After the overview of the issue, Riya Tirkey, a Psychologist conducted the screening assessments of internet addiction, internet gaming disorder, social media disorder, and smartphone addiction in students. The program consisted of a quiz and short video to increase awareness of internet safety. The Second day of the workshop was conducted with the presence of chief guest Mr. Shail Kumar, Deputy Director of the income tax department. The program commenced with the address note and inauguration by Dr, Bhupesh Kumar, Principal followed by a keynote address by Mr. Ajay Kumar Sinha, executive director, of FLAIR. It was followed by a panel discussion in which Ms. Ritisha, Clinical Psychologist, Mr. Raj Kumar, Special Correspondent Hindustan Times, Mr. Nabhojit Dey, Vice President, Global program and services, Adroit Associate, Mr. Ashish Anand, Consultant- Social Development, Department of Agriculture, and Dr. B. Beck, Director and Chairman of Seven Stars Academy, Ranchi, shared their views on the topic. They discussed about healthy internet consumption and how problematic internet usage impacts one’s physical health and mental health. The panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Praveen Raman, Media Advisor, FLAIR. The third day of the workshop began with the mark of Mental Health Day with its theme “Mental health is a universal human right”. The program was further led by Ritisha, a psychologist at FLAIR about mental health problems in students and professionals of hotel management field and solutions of it, she further mentioned how maintaining professional, academic and personal life is plays a significant role in healthy functioning she also told about the kind of services flair provides to promote, maintain and treat the mental health problems at last discussion was held with the students regarding common mental health concern faced by the students and it's possible solutions. The sample data of 98 was collected through screening assessment and analyzed, the sample was from the age group between 18-25 which was assessed on the variable of internet addiction, internet gaming disorder, social media disorder, and smartphone addiction. The result of the data revealed that 29 out of 98 (approximately 29.6%) participants fall under mild internet addiction and 42 out of 98 (approximately 42.9%) students fall under moderate level of internet addiction whereas 2 out of 98 (approximately 2.0%), participant fall under game addiction criterial range and 1 participant fall under the risk of developing addiction towards game addiction, moreover 35 out of 98 (approximately 35.7%) participants were indicative of social media addiction and 39 (approximately 39.8%) participants fall under risky usage of social media, according to the frequency result 25 out of 98 (approximately 25.5%) fall under smartphone addiction and 10 out of 98 (approximately 10.2%) fall under risky usage of the smartphone. The moderate level of addiction is concerning which demands preventive and immediate attention to not only stop us to fall under severity but also guide us to use smartphones healthily. 

These findings provide a statistical overview of the frequencies and proportions of different levels of internet addiction, gaming addiction, social media addiction, and smartphone addiction among the 98 participants surveyed. She also stated that COVID-19 marked the increase of active accounts on any social media platform, according to the survey conducted in Jharkhand in the year 2021 revealed that the active users on social media platforms has increased from 35.94% to 68.75% after covid. The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped our lives and accelerated our reliance on social media and the internet. While these platforms have connected us in a time of isolation, they've also exerted a significant influence on our mental health.The surge in active social media accounts and increased internet use during and after the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on our mental health. To navigate these challenges, it's essential to set boundaries, curate our online experiences, and prioritize our well-being. By approaching social media and the internet mindfully, we can harness their benefits while protecting our mental health in this digital age.

While speaking on the findings of the survey Riya stated that the figures underscore prominent severity of social media-related behaviors with the 39 participants suggestive of social media addiction among the surveyed participants, by shedding light on the prevalence of using social media as an emotional escape, excessive preoccupation, and emotional distress when access is restricted. While talking about the possible ways of corrective measures Ritisha stated that one should check early signs and symptoms and consult with mental health professional regarding the internet addiction, turn off or silent the notification of social media, games, applications and websites, people with problematic Internet users can use free application that can track their internet activity and usage by engaging themselves in their hobbies without using internet and people can use remainder to remind themself regarding the enough use of internet for time or day to curb the impact of problematic internet usage.
