Tell us about your journey. How did it all start?
One of the things that definitely drove me towards this LOB was wearing the uniform. In my youth, I was inclined towards defence services, calling it my propensity towards serving the nation or carrying on the family legacy, but I could not make it through the entrance exam and give up on that dream. Later graduated from Delhi University with a bachelor's degree in arts, I was raised in Delhi. In addition, I have a diploma in Hotel Management. It never occurred to me that it would take off the way it has, but I am grateful for the opportunities it has brought me.
After passing Hotel School I began with hands-on experience as a guest service associate at The Claridges Hotel New Delhi and went to Dubai at Le Meridien Hotel, Sahara India, Jaypee Group of Hotels, ITC’s Fortune Hotels, and Sarovar Hotels. I think I did a good job wherever I worked and my performance was excellent but the quest to learn and perform better has kept me going.
What do you think it takes to succeed in this industry?
The answer to this question is complex since success in the hotel industry depends on many factors. It is important, however, to have a solid understanding of the hotel business, develop a positive relationship with customers, and maintain a high level of quality.
The best way to succeed in it is by having a passion for hospitality and customer service, as well as a strong business sense that will help you run your establishment efficiently while keeping everything running smoothly without compromising quality too much.
What are the attributes you look for while selecting or hiring? If someone wants to work with you, what should they do?
In the hotel industry, I look for attributes such as customer service skills, multitasking abilities, and a positive attitude. In order to work with me, one must be passionate, have a hunger-in-the-belly attitude, and provide excellent customer service.
What advice would you give to a young, aspiring hotelier for their internship?
Make the most of your internship by being proactive and getting involved in as many aspects of the hotel as possible.
Talk to as many people as you can, including guests, staff, and management, to get a well-rounded view of the hospitality industry. Also, take advantage of any training or educational opportunities that your internship provides.
What is the one tech/app/software feature you would like to see? This could be for guests, operations, etc.
The one tech/app/software feature I would like to see is an app that allows guests to customize their stay. For example, the app could allow guests to choose what type of pillow they want, what type of breakfast they want, and what type of room they want.
What is your favourite interview question and why?
My favourite interview question is "What is your favourite book and why?" I love this question because it allows me to talk about something that I'm passionate about and it also shows that I'm a well-rounded person. I would also like to know which part of India you are from and why that region is so famous. In my understanding, every Indian city has its own story to tell, whether it's about its cuisine or its art.
