May 2022: OZEN LIFE MAADHOO announces a new addition to its inspiring gourmet concept restaurants, with LONU – a New Age Maldivian Concept. This new specialty restaurant, a part of the resort’s INDULGENCE TM Plan, embraces the bounty of the Indian Ocean.

Spread along the peaceful northeastern beach of Maadhoo island, LONU replaces the resort’s R.A.W outlet. The restaurant’s menu boasts age-old traditional recipes, reimagined as sophisticated small plates, perfect for a flavourful afternoon meal. Lonu means ‘salt’ in Dhivehi—every dish here is creatively woven around this star ingredient and complemented by fresh native herbs and indigenous spices. The local character is enhanced by heartfelt Maldivian touches like the use of sustainable clayware and handcrafted wooden plates.

Exquisite island favorites on the menu include Masroshi (stuffed tuna bread), Masmirus Prawn Wrap, and Kanamadhu Cake (sea salt almond cake). These eclectic dishes are paired with a curated list of organic rose wines alongside traditional beverages such as Khiru Chai, toddy, and mocktails infused with local spices. Executing this authentic experience is Chef Abdulla Rameez, the Maldivian Specialty Chef at OZEN LIFE MAADHOO. His passion lies in bringing delectable organic dishes to life that celebrate indigenous cuisine. Beyond gastronomy, guests will be immersed in an engaging, multi-sensory cultural experience. On the soulful menu are live cooking sessions and interactions with the local chef. A display of a Maldivian Spice Box allows guests to explore and understand the ingredients in close detail. Charming storytelling brings alive the archipelago’s rich history and culture. Guests carry away with them colourful sarongs and spice boxes, along with an unforgettable slice of Maldivian life.

Henar Gil Rios, General Manager of OZEN LIFE MAADHOO, says “LONU, our newest restaurant is one of the Maldives’ most unique dining experiences. From flavourful, island-harvested salt crystals to herbs handpicked from the Kitchen Garden. Guests relish island specialities made with 100% locally sourced ingredients, in this lively beach restaurant with sparkling turquoise-blue lagoon views.“

Visit Maldives | Aviation is one of the fundamental pillars that led to the advent of global tourism, says CEO & MD of MMPRC

The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), Mr Thoyyib Mohamed, has stated that aviation is one of the fundamental pillars that led to the advent of global tourism. Mr Thoyyib made this statement while speaking during a panel discussion held during the 9th Arab Aviation Summit, being held in Dubai.

Speaking during this panel, Mr Thoyyib delineated on how the past two years had transformed the entire state of the world, especially the tourism and aviation industry. Noting that the travel and aviation industries were perhaps some of the hardest hit by the global pandemic, he commended the steadfast efforts of the global travel trade towards recovery.

Citing Aviation as one of the fundamental pillars that led to the advent of global tourism, Mr Thoyyib said that the tourism and the aviation industry should work closely together to overcome the challenges. He stated that during the early days of the lockdowns, MMPRC made sure to constantly keep a strong relationship with local and global aviation partners. He announced that over 35 international flights currently operate to the Maldives.

Referring to how destinations can stand out and become the preferred choice for travelers in the post-pandemic era, Mr Thoyyib said destinations have to implement stringent safety measures and see how the natural geography and unique features of the country can contribute to making it a safe option for travelers. He then went on to highlight how the Maldives heavily promotes the scattered geography of the country and the ‘one island one resort’ concept as a feature that makes the Maldives a safe destination.

Outlining the ‘new normal’ for the tourism industry, Mr Thoyyib said that we are already in the midst of a new normal, and every new phase of the global pandemic presents us with a brand new version of ‘the new normal’. He further elaborated that it’s important to carry on with our lives and work towards full recovery of the tourism industry and the economy as a whole. He also noted that we shouldn’t be under the impression that the global tourism market will return to the state it was in prior to 2020, rather we should work towards evolving with every phase of the new normal.

Speaking further during this panel, Mr Thoyyib referred to the important role the Middle East plays as a growing source market for the Maldives. He said this market is one of the fastest growing markets to the Maldives, as well as the central hub for a large number of tourists. He expressed pride over the fact that leading Middle Eastern airlines such as Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airways, Fly Dubai, Etihad Airways, and Gulf Air operate to the Maldives on a regular basis.

Endorsed by the Arab Government and previously held in various Arab countries, the Arab Aviation Summit 2022 is hosted in collaboration with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) and supported by global industry partners such as Airbus, CFM, Air Arabia, Alpha Aviation Academy, and Ras Al Khaimah Airport.

From the GCC market, Saudi Arabia was the top 6th market to the Maldives, with an impressive arrival figure of 39,178 travelers. The entire Middle East region accounted for 7.0% of total arrivals in 2021. In order to maintain this momentum and position Middle Eastern markets as top markets to Maldives, MMPRC is conducting a wide variety of marketing activities in the region. We are taking part in Arabian Travel Market 2022, ILTM Arabia 2022, Riyadh Travel Fair 2022. We are also conducting a Maldives Roadshow in Dubai, as well as media familiarization trips, and a joint marketing campaign with Emirates Holidays.

Visit Maldives | THE GUEST HOUSE CULTURE IN MALDIVES

Crystal clear seas, powdery white sand and indulgence beyond measure are three things that come to mind whenever the Maldives is mentioned. Whilst the country is famous for its unique beauty and extravagant resorts, it is not solely dedicated to the wealthy tourist – it offers various accommodation options catering to a diverse range of preferences. These facilities are broadly categorized into four types: resorts, hotels, guesthouses and liveaboards.

Ever since the relaxation of tourism rules which were restricting all tourism to resorts on uninhabited islands, the guesthouse industry has boomed in Maldives. Since then, many guesthouses have been developed in inhabited islands, with the greater Male’ region being the main hub.

The styles of guesthouses range from budget to boutique to bed and breakfast inns and more. The amenities, service and luxury vary from that of resorts, but guests have access to similar types of activities that resorts offer. Opportunities for excursions to nearby islands and sandbanks, watersports, snorkeling, and diving are available. Most islands with guesthouses also have watersports and diving centers.

By staying at a guesthouse, tourists will have the prospect of experiencing the rich culture of the country like a true local: make new friends, discover the history of the island by visiting accessible historical hotspots or even partake in day-to-day activities. For the budget traveler, the backpacker or the knowledge-seeker, the stay will surely reap benefits to last a lifetime.

The biggest difference one may notice is that while resorts adhere to the one-island-one-resort concept, guest houses do not. This means that tourists must bear in mind to be respectful of the local community, its customs, and traditions. As Maldives is a Muslim country, women are expected to dress more modestly on the islands than in resorts. The consumption of alcohol and pork, while not forbidden for tourists, is also usually frowned upon, but this is offset by the many other wonderful opportunities. islands have to offer. Witness kids as they play in their own imaginative worlds, play a game of football in the evening, hang out on the beaches while sipping on a cup of tea and eating hedhikaa (short eats), or simply join in the chit-chat amongst the locals.

For the year 2021, marketing activities and campaigns carried out by Visit Maldives will have a significant focus on promotion of local tourism and guesthouses. The government is working to open the country to cultural tourism as a key part of its economic diversification plans, and an emphasis will be given on promoting local tourism, culture, and heritage of Maldives.

Visit Maldives | Discover Maldives Enviroment

The Maldives has one of the most delicate environments anywhere on the planet. Coral reefs are the foundation of the islands. They offer protection to the tiny islands as their natural defense system, and the country’s economy depends heavily on the health of its reefs and ecosystems.

Several conservation efforts are underway to protect the valuable marine environment of Maldives. While several marine species and birds are protected by law, protected areas have been designated to ensure the conservation of specific ecosystems and the rich biodiversity of the country. This includes designated nature reserves in islands of various atolls to protect wetlands and mangroves and the protection of marine areas and the designation of biosphere reserves that covers coral reefs, islands, seagrass beds, and mangroves.

Several resorts too conduct their own programs. While some programs conducted by resorts focus on the protection and rehabilitation of sea turtles, others are engaged in cutting-edge research on the regeneration of coral reefs. Several community education programs are also conducted by resorts for school children and the community at large. Non-governmental organizations also play an important role through their voluntary programs and conduct regular beach and reef clean-up programs.

Visitors to the Maldives are advised to carry back their own non-biodegradable waste and to take care not to stand on, touch, or remove coral structures while snorkeling or diving.
