Toronto just got a new pet and eco-freindly hotel by the airport

A brand new hotel has just opened across from Toronto Pearson Airport. The hotel itself is owned by Easton's Group of Hotels, which has already built nine other Marriott branded hotels. 

Branded as an "eco-conscious" building, Element has water filtration systems in every "outdoor-inspired" suite, shareable bikes for guests to borrow, and electric car charging stations.

Toronto is getting a new Hotel next to the Waterfront

One of Toronto's most ambitious development projects will include a hotel component as the Pinnacle One Yonge revises its plans once again to create a new addition. The five-building development designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects.

The overall development also includes three residential towers, one of which will become Canada's tallest condo tower when completed.

Helsinki hospitality startup Bob W raises €4 million for tech-enabled apartment hotels with custom sanitisation process

Bob W, a Helsinki-based hospitality startup, has raised €4 million in a seed round led by by Founders and joined by real estate investors NREP and Estonian firm Kaamos.

The Finnish startup offers an accommodation hybrid between hotels and short-stay apartments or hosted homes like Airbnb, which guests can rent nightly, weekly or monthly. 

 The hospitality company also touts its ‘Ridiculously Clean Standard’, a 63-step protocol to clean, sanitize, disinfect and seal every suite.

Condor Hospitality Trust Provides Update on Its Response To COVID-19

Condor Hospitality Trust, Inc. (NYSE American: CDOR), a hotel-focused real estate investment trust (REIT) headquartered and incorporated in the state of Maryland, provided an update today on its response to COVID-19.

J. William Blackham, Chief Executive Officer said, “There have been significant changes in business and economic conditions generally in the United States and in the lodging industry in particular as the COVID-19 crisis continues. As many others in the lodging industry have determined, the Company has determined that it is advisable and in the best business practice for the Company to cause temporary closures of 30 to 90 days of two of its hotels located in Solomons, MD and Leawood, KS, and the Company is evaluating on a daily basis similar temporary closures of hotels located in Lake Mary, FL, San Antonio, TX and Round Rock, TX. We will continue to assess reopenings of these hotels, and potential temporary closings of other Company hotels, based on specific market trends.”

The Company is taking these additional actions to address operating costs and to better position the Company in the current lodging environment.

DiamondRock Hospitality Company Provides Update And Announces Steps To Mitigate COVID-19 Impact

DiamondRock Hospitality Company (NYSE: DRH), a lodging-focused real estate investment trust that owns a portfolio of 31 premium hotels in the United States, provided an update today on the impact of COVID-19 on its operations and announced the proactive steps management is taking to mitigate the financial impact.

The Company is withdrawing the guidance it issued on February 20, 2020, due to the uncertainty surrounding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  As of March 14, 2020, the Company's total revenues have been negatively impacted by approximately $23 million of cancelled group business, excluding potential cancellation fees. Other highlights:

  • Nearly 85% of the group cancellations are concentrated in March (55%) and April (30%).

  • At this time, less than 3% of group business cancellations extend beyond June 2020.

  • Cancellation fees are expected to mitigate a portion of the expected losses.

  • Geographically, nearly 41% of the group business cancellations are in Boston, 8.5% are in Chicago, 8.0% are in Fort Worth and less than 3% are in New York.

    In coordination with its hotel operators, the Company has developed actions plans to significantly reduce costs at each of its hotels:

    • The Company has suspended operations at hotel restaurants and outlets where demand is insufficient or local prohibitions do not permit social gatherings.

    • The Company is proactively "right-sizing" hotels to current demand levels in order to aggressively reduce costs and maximize efficiency.

    • The Company has cancelled or deferred the vast majority of its capital expenditures.

IHG Announces Senior Leadership Appointments in the Americas

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) announces that it has named two versatile IHG leaders into new senior leadership positions – Jay Caiafa, Chief Operating Officer, Americas, and Brian Hicks, Senior Vice President, Commercial and Revenue Management, Americas

Caiafa has been with IHG since 2013 and has held multiple leadership roles with the company.  In his previous role as SVP, Hotel Lifecycle and Growth, he led multiple teams across all aspects of the hotel lifecycle, including architecture, design, construction, hotel openings, hotel ramp up, renovations and quality assurance, and also oversaw teams responsible for the delivery of the Americas growth strategy.

With his promotion to COO, Americas, he will lead the Americas Operations Leadership Team, with oversight of more than 4,000 IHG hotels across the U.S. and Canada, and will further strengthen and cultivate relationships with owners. In addition, he will continue his role as IHG’s representative on the Metro Atlanta Chamber Board of Directors, driving engagement with the broader business community in the home of the company’s Americas headquarters.

Prior to his time with IHG, Caiafa led teams at companies across multiple industries, including legal, commercial real estate finance, strategic consulting and biotechnology.

Hicks has more than 30 years of international hospitality experience – the majority of which has been with IHG, including more than ten years working in the Americas region. He was promoted from his previous role as VP, Global Revenue Management Strategy. In his new role, Hicks will lead the Revenue Management function and the Commercial team in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean, and will be responsible for overseeing and integrating all revenue-generating strategies, initiatives, programs and plans to drive competitive commercial performance across the region. In addition, he will lead the Americas Revenue Strategy Committee, working with Global and Regional Revenue leaders.
