Lesser known architectural marvels in India to add to your bucket list on World Architecture Day

While all of us love traveling we often head to popular destinations and end up missing out on attractions that are lesser known. There are many attractions in India that still remain lesser known to travelers and few of these places are certainly going to leave you awestruck. On World Architecture Day, Booking.com has curated a list of lesser-known monuments in India that every traveler should visit at least once. These stunning architectural marvels in India are a source of fascination due to their exquisite and exceptional architecture. Let’s start our tour of some of these outstanding marvels of India.

Dabhoi, Gujarat

Originally known as Darbhavati, the ancient fortified town of Dabhoi is known for the Dabhoi Fort that boasts of beautiful and intricate stone carvings and iconography on its walls and gates. Daboi also has six temples and is also a popular pilgrimage site significant for the Jain religion  Located approx 35 km from Vadodara, Dabhoi, with its stunning grandeur, was also home to a number of Jain scholars and houses  the Jain Granth Bhandar, a collection of ancient Jain manuscripts. In recent times, Dabhoi has also gained fame for its narrow-gauge railway station, one of the largest and the oldest in Asia.

Pari Mahal, Jammu & Kashmir

An ancient school of astrology and also an observatory is the beautiful Pari Mahal. Surrounded by the Himalayan range and overlooking the serene Dal lake, Pari Mahal was built by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Shah Jahan, in honour of his Sufi tutor, Mullah Shah Badakhshi. Dara Shikoh was a believer in mysticism and he combined that with his love for Kashmir to build the ‘Abode of Fairies’ in 1640 CE. Data would have discussions on various topics with learned wise men at the mahal. If you are travelling to Kashmir, this lesser known monument is a  must add to your list.

Bada Bagh, Jaisalemar, Rajasthan

Situated amid the Thar desert, Bada Bagh was originally the resting place of many members of the royal family who once ruled the region. What attracts travellers here are the many cenotaphs built in honour of the royals. Constructed with yellow sandstone, these are beautiful expressions of artistic workmanship. Boosting the Rajasthani architectural style with chhatris or cenotaphs, this historical monument is worth a visit.

Pathra Village, West Bengal

Known as a village of ancient temples, the beautiful ruins of Pathra  tell a story of the rich past. Built in the vernacular Bengal style, also known as the Atchala style of architecture, these temples, some of which are 200 years old,  have intricate detailing on their terracotta body.. Most of these temples are built in complexes and still have deities inside which could tell a lot about the religious beliefs of the residents back then. The beautiful ruins of Pathra tell a story of the rich past.

Chini Ka Rauza, Agra

Located in the city of Taj Mahal, Chini Ka Rauza is one of the masterpieces of Indo-Persian architecture. This tomb was built in the honor of renowned poet and scholar, Afzal Khan Shirazi, who was the prime minister to Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The name ‘Chini’ is derived from the use of colourful tiles in the mosaic pattern which were made of porcelain or ‘Chini Mitti’. The inscriptions and Islamic texts on the walls of the tiles add uniqueness to this lesser explored monument. Some also believe that the design of the Taj Mahal was inspired by Chini Ka Rauza.

Elgandal Fort, Telangana

This 11th century fort belongs to the Kakatiya dynasty that ruled South India between 1083 and 1323 AD, before being conquered by the Delhi Sultanate. The grand fort, situated atop the Elgandal khilla hill is surrounded by moats, 16 ft wide and 13 ft deep and filled with crocodiles to protect the fort in case of intrusion. Getting captured by the warrior kings Musunuri Nayaks in the 16th century and then by the Mughal Empire, the fort has many stories of various dynasties to tell. During the Nizam reign, the Elgandal (originally known as Veligundula) was their headquarters before the district headquarter was shifted to Karimnagar in the 20th century. The fort is about 180 km away from Hyderabad and is easily accessible by road.

Café Noir Embraces Classic French Cooking Techniques in its All-New Menu – A Parisian Affair

OCTOBER 2022: As Mumbai prepares to leave behind grey skies and welcome a change of seasons, the city’s favorite all-day café - Cafe Noir, serving French casual cuisine, is ready to kick up its own storm with an all-new menu – A Parisian Affair. The menu highlights classic French flavours, cooking techniques, healthy dishes, and a range of vegan and keto options keeping in mind the palettes of health-conscious customers.

Keeping high-quality, seasonal produce at the forefront, the new menu transforms locally and internationally-sourced ingredients into classic French dishes, that one may have sampled at a typical French bistro.  Through this menu, one will experience dishes made using signature French techniques such as slow cooking and sous vide, as well as items such as hand-churned ice cream, homemade cheese, freshly baked in-house bread, homemade jams, dips and more. Classically French at heart, the new menu items come with a special Café Noir twist which will leave the diners wanting for more.  A few of the novel additions include vegetarian options such as Za’atar Spiced Broccoli, farm fresh broccoli marinated with zaatar spice, grilled to perfection; Quinoa, Hass Avocado & Orange Salad, mix of white and black quinoa, avocado, hazelnut with yuzu dressing; Red Wine Poached Pear with Smoked Feta Cream, pears poached in wine with smoked feta cream and candied walnuts; and Broccoli & Kale Soup, made with fresh broccoli and kale. Guests can also try non-veg options such as Harissa Chicken & Emmental Crepe with lettuce, caramelised onions and mushrooms; Cheese Melt Lamb Burger, hand-pounded lamb patty, caramelised onions, fried egg and cheese melt; and Textures of Snapper, pan-seared red snapper, buttered mashed edamame, potato dauphinoise, snapper croquette and yuzu sauce, a must try on the Mains. Goat Cheese Spinach & Sundried Tomato Quiche, which will be made-to-order; wood-fired Arugula Feta Pizza, Margherita topped with arugula, feta drizzle with balsamic reduction; Verte Mock Duck Sub, mock duck, spicy mayo arugula, pickles and cheddar melt, come with a special recommendation from the Chef.

"The idea behind the new menu is to give our guests the experience of Classic French cuisine. Many more flavours and fresh ingredients have been added to this new menu. From freshly baked Quiche, classic Paris crepes to French classic mains." Chef Shreyas Kadam, Sous Chef Cafe Noir Mumbai.  Speaking about the menu curation, Amit Shetty, Chef De Cuisine, Cafe Noir and Taki Taki, Mumbai adds, “The thought behind the new menu was to keep ingredients fresh, have healthier options, a fine dining experience, and focused more on cooking techniques. Cooking is a bit like cinema. It’s the emotion that counts. To me, food is as much about the moment, and experience as the guest.”

Through this new menu which focuses on quality produce and cooking techniques, Café Noir aims to give guests an opulent fine dining restaurant experience.

Ingredient Ideology |Indo -Italian Fusion Rice Bowls Tempting DelicaciesBY. DR. KAVIRAJ KHIALANI- CELEBRITY MASTER CHEF

Risotto is a northern Italian rice dish cooked with broth until it reaches a creamy consistency. The broth can be derived from meat, fish, or vegetables. Many types of risotto contain butter, onion, white wine, and parmesan cheese. It is one of the most common ways of cooking rice in Italy. Despite its appearance, risotto is not a type of rice but an Italian dish made with a special high-starch, short-grain rice such Italian Arborio. This special kind of rice can absorb quite a bit of liquid without becoming mushy.

Unlike other rice recipes that require simmering in a pot of water, risotto is cooked very slowly by adding 1/2 cup of liquid at a time. This process allows the rice to release its starches, creating a rich, velvety sauce with soft but slightly al dente grains. Meat and mushroom risotto pair best with light red wines, such as Pinot Noir and Lambrusco or earthy undertones such as Chardonnay.

Risotto is best served warm, often in heated bowls or plates. It can be a side dish to a meat or fish entrée and is often served in restaurants as the first course. Once you perfect a basic risotto, you can try a variety of risotto recipes that include vegetables and proteins such as lobster and chicken. Accompany the risotto with a salad or cooked vegetables and Italian bread.

Here are a few of my “Desi Twist Riso Rice Bowl” variations to suit our taste and palate with a little twist of taste in the Indo- Italian delicacy!

Coffee lovers travel guide to the best coffee plantations in India

There is no better start to the day than a cup of freshly brewed coffee! This International Coffee Day, Booking.com, the leading travel brand has curated a list of coffee plantations in India where travellers can be a part of the coffee bean selection process, indulge in tastings, and get a much needed caffeine rush.

Mostly grown in the hilly areas of South India, in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, these coffee plantations stretch on for miles. If you are a coffee enthusiast, bookmark these places for an assured caffeine rush!

Coorg, Karnataka

Surrounded by numerous lakes, lush green hills, rich flora and fauna, Coorg, is known for its Arabica and Robusta brews. Almost 40% of India's coffee is grown in Coorg, and it plays a significant role in the local economy. November is the best time to visit this hill station as coffee lovers will be able to witness berry picking during this time .Some of the places that you could visit during your stay at Coorg include Abbey Falls, mini Tibet of Bylakuppe, Virajpet and Mandalpatti.

Chikmagalur,Karnataka
Known as the ‘Coffee Land of Karnataka’ Chikmagalur is a must visit for coffee enthusiasts. When the British Raj introduced coffee to India, it all began at Chikmagalur. Additionally, it is from here that the bulk of the nation's coffee is produced. You can hire a tour guide to show you around this lush, mountainous region and explain how coffee is made, or you can hike through it to learn more about the plantations or just back and simply enjoy a warm cup of coffee. In Chikmagalur, you may discover a lot of resorts surrounded by coffee plantations. You don't have to travel far to look for or smell fresh coffee beans.

PalaniHills,TamilNadu
The Palani Hills, a continuation of the Western Ghats, are home to elegant mansions on coffee estates. Along with coffee, the area is renowned for its avocado, pepper, and lime plantations. The Rajakkad Estate has a hotel that dates back to the 18th century, which takes pride in serving freshly ground coffee. Guided tours of the coffee estate are also available.

Wayanad,Kerala
Apart from the beautiful coffee plantations, Wayanad also provides multiple other activities to do that will make your visit worthwhile. If you travel in November or December, you may gather berries, go bird watching, hike up to the Edakkal caves, which have inscriptions that date back 8,000 years, or go rafting on the Kuruva Dweep river. Don't forget to visit a handful of the country's biggest waterfalls, which can be found in Wayanad.

Chikhaldara, Maharashtra

One of the only coffee plantations in Maharashtra, Chikhaldara is about 600kms from Pune. Pretty lakes, waterfalls, and the hilly terrains of Amravati. It is a bird watcher’s paradise with several old forts to keep the history nerds engaged. As it is still relatively unknown on the tourist map, this plantation should be on your itinerary for a peaceful holiday away from the hustle bustle.

Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

Araku Valley is a beautiful hill station in the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. Located along the Eastern Ghats, the area is home to numerous tribes, all of whom are involved in the cultivation of coffee. The local tribes have their own brand of brilliant organic coffee called Araku Emerald claimed to be the first organic coffee by a tribe in India. Visitors can buy from them and enjoy the local taste of this famous coffee. Other regions in Andhra Pradesh that produce some great coffee are Chintapalli, Paderu and Maredumilli.
