IHG Hotels & Resorts and NOVUM Hospitality open first Holiday Inn – the niu hotel in Germany

IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, today opens the first Holiday Inn – the niu property in Germany, Holiday Inn - the niu Cure, Erlangen, marking the debut of the collaboration between Holiday Inn and the niu.

Anchored in a shared passion for distinctive design and memorable hospitality, Holiday Inn – the niu represents an exciting opportunity to combine the niu’s extensive domestic presence and unique design inspired by locality, with Holiday Inn’s global reputation and brand recognition. Together this delivers a hotel experience that offers genuine hospitality with personal service and provides great value for people travelling for business or leisure. As with all IHG Hotels & Resorts properties, guests who have booked to stay in a Holiday Inn – the niu hotel will be able to earn and redeem points when they sign up for IHG One Rewards, one of the world's largest hotel loyalty programmes.

Situated in the historic town of Erlangen, Holiday Inn – the niu Cure takes its design cues from the city’s well-known affiliation with medicine and medical technology. The name "Cure" pays homage to the medical progress of the city, which is reflected in the design ethos of the hotel. The use of ring-shaped pendant lamps, a warm pine-green and wood colour palette combined with natural materials throughout the hotel’s furnishings all aim to help promote relaxation and recuperation. Like all Holiday Inn – the niu properties, the 177 room Holiday Inn – the niu Cure is designed to be stylish and homely, while providing guests with all the comforts needed to refresh and recharge – including free wi-fi, smart TV with screen mirroring, blackout curtains and a hot buffet breakfast.

Known as one of Germany's best-preserved Baroque era cities, Erlangen has plenty to offer for those looking to visit for a weekend getaway or to extend their business trip. With large open squares that host daily market stalls, festivals, and cultural events throughout the year, Erlangen hosts some of the world's most renowned conventions such as Comic Salon – an annual event held for comic art and graphic literature. True to German heritage, Erlangen is also home to Bergkirchweih, one of Germany's oldest folk and beer festivals.

Mario Maxeiner, Managing Director, Northern Europe at IHG Hotels & Resorts, commented: “We are delighted to work with our partners at NOVUM Hospitality, to open the first Holiday Inn - the niu hotel in Germany. This is a brand collaboration that offers guests the comfort and expertise of one of the world’s most recognised and trusted brands, Holiday Inn, combined with the stylish and locally inspired design of the niu. Holiday Inn - the niu Cure is an excellent first representation of how this brand collaboration comes to life. We look forward to converting and opening the doors to more than 50 existing hotels for this brand collaboration in the months to come.”

David Etmenan, Chief Executive Officer & Owner NOVUM Hospitality, said: “As one of Europe's largest privately-owned hotel operators, we look forward to witnessing our flagship brand, the niu, embark on a new chapter alongside the globally renowned Holiday Inn brand. Seeing this collaboration come to fruition has been a genuine pleasure, as it highlights a strategic milestone in our company’s history. We are beyond proud of what our teams – both at IHG and NOVUM Hospitality – have accomplished in the past weeks and months.”

As with Holiday Inn’s Open Lobby concept, all Holiday Inn – the niu hotels have ‘Living Lobbies’ - feel-good oases to help guests unwind and relax or serve as a great co-working space. The onsite bar lounge area is the perfect place to round off the day with a drink and some light bites and the hotel’s 24hour Lobby Shop offers a selection of snacks available to purchase including confectionery and savoury snacks.

German hospitality industry still far below pre-crisis revenues

The German hotel and restaurant industry in July further recovered from its slump caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but sales were still down more than a quarter when compared to pre-crisis levels, the statistics office said on Tuesday.

Revenues were up 21.9% month-on-month in real terms when adjusted for seasonal effects and declined by 26.8% versus July 2019, the office said in a statement.

Catering companies were hardest hit with a decline of 41.9% on the year.

The sector was essentially shut down in March as Germany’s 16 states introduced wide-ranging distancing measures to slow the spread of the pandemic.

Some restaurants temporarily closed while others switched to take-away services to stay afloat. Hotels were hit by a slump in leisure travel and cancelled trade fairs and congresses.

Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts Will Reopen Its Hotels in Germany Before the End of May

Thomas Willms, CEO, Deutsche Hospitality, undertook an on-site visit to the Steigenberger Hotel Munich on Thursday 14 May 2020 in order to clarify how the company’s new extended guidelines and hygiene measures will apply in practice. “We have been trialling and revising a new hygiene concept on an ongoing basis over the past few weeks,”

Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts will reopen its hotels in Germany before the end of May. The Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts in Bad Homburg, Bad Neuenahr, Bad Pyrmont, Petersberg, Braunschweig, Bremen, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Heringsdorf, Jena, Cologne, Leipzig and Zingst will recommence operations on 25 May.

The Steigenberger Inselhotel in Constance will also open on 29 May and the Steigenberger Hotel in Munich on 30 May.

The Steigenberger Hotel Dortmund and the Steigenberger Hotel Bad Wörishofen will be welcoming guests back from 8 June and 10 June respectively. Finally, the Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof, the Steigenberger Conti Hansa Kiel, the Steigenberger Hotel Berlin, the Steigenberger Hotel Metropolitan, the Hotel Fürstenhof Bad Pyrmont and the Steigenberger Hotel Hamburg are scheduled to be available again from 1 July. The Steigenberger Hotel Treudelberg Hamburg is already back in business and will be accepting reservations from 15 May.

Presentation of the new standards

Thomas Willms joined Oliver Schafer, General Manager of the Steigenberger Hotel Munich, to explain how guest arrivals will be managed whilst maintaining social distancing and ensuring compliance with the new hygiene regulations. Further areas covered included the restaurants, the guest lifts and the conferencing area.

How the hotel’s facilities could be used without compromising social distancing. One guest room had been adapted by removing the usual decorative cushions, stationery articles and bathrobes. The TV remote control and all the glasses in the room itself and in the bathroom were disinfected after use and packed away in a paper bag. Despite the reduction in the number of utensils provided in the room, guests are, of course, welcome to request any additional items they need at any time.
