“There are two launches happening both in the Corbett area—one we had signed last year called the Tree of Life Homestead, which is between Kashipur and Ramnagar, so not really Corbett, but it's in the district. It's a very interesting property which has just 12 rooms set in 160 acres of an estate with amazing trees and its own six-hole golf course it's got a small airstrip, it's got ATV machines, it's got the most amazing observatory, its got a hammam and spa, an ideal getaway,” Anand said adding that the pandemic had delayed the opening by a year, and now this property would open on May 1.

The rooms were going to be around INR 6,000 per night with breakfast, he added. Anand was also opening a Dog Story—his pet-centric getaway brand, The Dog Story Corbett Country, at the same location.

The second property scheduled to launch is the Tree of Life VanVilas River Edge, Corbett National Park which they had signed recently.

“This property is more inside Corbett and has only six rooms—two are actually built in a Kumaoni home, made of stone which is probably 100 years old and four rooms are built in the extension. The advantage of this property it’s on the banks of a river behind which is the full forest,” he said adding that they were 12 kilometers from the Bijrani Gate and eight kilometers from the Sitamani buffer zone.

New Opening | A First Look Inside Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s New Restaurant

sona.jpg

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is getting into the restaurant game.

The star signed on to be a creative collaborator in David Rabin (The Lambs Club, Skylark, Café Clover) and entrepreneur Maneesh Goyal’s new restaurant, Sona. Opening on Thursday, Sona will serve modern Indian food in a stylish space in Gramercy. “Sona is the very embodiment of timeless India and the flavours I grew up with,” Chopra Jonas wrote on her Instagram announcing the project.

“I would oftentimes get asked, where’s the Indochine of Indian food in New York, where do you go to have really great Indian food with a cool vibe?” recalls Goyal, who moved to New York City in 1999. “I kept saying, that’s a great question, but there’s no answer to that. Ultimately, I said, well, if there’s not an answer, maybe I should create the answer.”

Goyal’s parents emigrated from Punjab and eventually opened one of Dallas’ first Indian restaurants in 1975, a few months after Goyal was born. Called India House, the restaurant was open through the mid-1980s and the experience stuck with him. “It started to become more apparent to me that the country of my ancestral heritage if I didn’t try to build a bridge to it, what’s going to be my connection?” says Goyal. “There’s a continuity, there’s a legacy that I would love to be a part of.”

Goyal and Rabin started discussing the project back in 2015, and they soon brought on Chef Hari Nayak—a Daniel Boulud protégé at the helm of Dubai’s Bombay Bungalow and Masti, Bangkok’s Jhol, India’s Alchemy Bangalore, and the chef behind the ubiquitous Café Spice meals in grocery stores—for his first executive chef role at a U.S. restaurant. Interior designer and stylist Melissa Bowers, the former design director for the Miami Beach Faena District’s artistic fantasyland, came on in 2018.

Bowers and Chopra Jonas worked closely on the look and feel of the restaurant. “There’s nobody that personifies global Indian more than Priyanka, and she has broken down boundaries in a way that no one from Bollywood has today,” says Goyal, who met Chopra Jonas through a mutual friend. “Priyanka didn’t want [the design] to be on-the-nose Indian, but she also knew how to make it uniquely Indian in certain ways, and Melissa was interpreting and hearing all of it.”

The Indian decor references were ultimately inspired by what Bowers terms, “Indo Deco,” the Art Deco period in India, of which Mumbai is a primary example—the city has the largest collection of Art Deco buildings after South Beach.

Visit Maldives | The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands Opens

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands Set to open June 1, 2021, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands invites guests to embrace island life from the moment they arrive on its white-sand shores. Guests will be able to absorb a plethora of Maldivian culture and traditions, whether they are relaxing in their luxury overwater villa, watching the sunset from the sandy shore, or sipping an afternoon tea on property.

Upon arrival at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, guests are greeted by The Island Caller. To signal their arrivals, the Caller will blow the traditional Maldivian Sangu shell, also more commonly known as Triton’s Trumpet. The shell signifies an important piece of the Maldivian culture, as they were mostly used in the region by quiet island villages to share warnings or signal public gatherings, as the sound of the Sangu can be heard across the island.

As guests check in to the resort, they may notice many circular shapes and structures around the property. The resort encourages guests to embrace the cyclical nature of island life through distinct choices in architecture as well as in-room amenities. Each villa includes an artfully crafted Beru, or drum, which coincides with the evening Bodu Beru, an indigenous form of dance and music with drums - made locally from coconut wood on the island - and one of the oldest surviving traditions dating back to the 11th century. This sunset ritual at the resort’s Eau Bar is unique to the property and allows guests to reflect on a day full of discoveries, while transitioning into an evening of relaxation, indulgence and reflection.

Guests of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands will each have an Aris Meeha, or island butler, a concept inspired by the royal courts of the ancient Maldives. In Dhivehi, the local language,

Aris Meeha refers to a person who is assigned to a royal member, one of the most important positions among the many titles and rankings in a Maldivian Royal household. Similar to a modern-day butler, Aris Meeha fulfills every detail of the life of a royal and considered to be the closest confidant much like a Gentleman's gentleman or Lady in waiting or Gentlemen or Lady of the Chamber. (The concept also relates to The Ritz-Carlton’s brand motto of ‘We are Ladies & Gentlemen serving Ladies & Gentlemen’).

Once guests have eased into the pace of island life, they can focus on being present and together. The resort offers a traditional afternoon tea that is perfect for connecting and sharing the day’s discoveries with one another and planning for the evening ahead. Guests can enjoy their afternoon tea by the pool at Eau Bar, where the contemporary version of this ceremonial tea is based on Maldivian Hedhika and focused on providing local, light bites to guests. Shaping the country and culture, the Maldives lies in the old maritime spice route, and as such, the resort’s signature cocktail selection is inspired by the archipelago’s favorite five spices: cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, cumin, and turmeric.

In an effort to reduce import footprints, guests of the resort will enjoy sustainably caught fish from local fishermen, fresh vegetables, and herbs cultivated from the resort’s organic garden. Guests also have the option of participating in Maldivian cooking classes to the art of making Mashuni, a breakfast staple in the island nation, made with tuna and fresh coconut.

As guests of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands continue to explore the resort and its surrounding areas, they may find themselves at The Marina at Fari Islands, which is built around the vibrant Fari Beach Club, high-end boutiques, a selection of upscale restaurants, an art studio, and Fari Lagoon Coral Adoption & Marine Biology Center. With around-the-clock boat transfers courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, guests are welcomed with an array of meaningful experiences during their stay. This archipelago redefines the Maldivian experience, allowing guests of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands to experience a balance of cosmopolitan and private island life never before seen in the region.

New restaurant openings in Mumbai: From Bandra and beyond | Tori, Khar

New restaurants opening in Mumbai

As part of its ‘Unlock 5.0’ the state government of Maharashtra permitted restaurants, cafes, and bars to start-up in the first week of October 2020. This was timed for establishments to make the most of the Diwali holidays. The first two months following ‘Unlock 5.0’, most restaurant owners were simply trying to get their restaurants up and running. But by December, several new properties began opening up too.

Bastian and Woodside Inn opened their new outposts in Worli and Bandra respectively. As did Social which crossed the creek and went over into Thane for the first time. Business in Powai, which had seen some half a dozen launches in the second half of 2019 before the lockdown killed the buzz, is slowly picking up again with restaurants such as Foo and Sesami going so far as to throw open their doors to diners on the same weekend! The two were among these seven restaurants in Mumbai racing to launch just in time for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Even more, have been added to that list since.

The bright young thing that’s opened up at the same location where Sancho’s once stood is a big leg up on its predecessor. Helmed by Thomas Pongsak Catley, a former Nobu chef who’d never been to India till he was hired to launch it, Tori brings together the distinct flavors of Asian and Latin American cuisines. From tunas and sushis to beef burgers and hearty chicken dishes, Chef Tom manages to create a flavor that’s distinct but also familiar.

Marriott debuts Autograph Collection in Singapore

Marriott has brought its Autograph Collection to Singapore with the opening of Duxton Reserve Singapore, a rebranding of the former Six Senses Duxton property.

The hotel is owned by The Garcha Group and was created from eight sustainably restored 19th century shophouses, fitting with the Autograph Collection’s emphasis on ‘neighbourhood’ and ‘sense of place’.

The hotel is located in the historic Tanjong Pagar district and in the heart of Chinatown, surrounded by attractions including the National Museum of Singapore and Asian Civilisations Museum. The area also boasts the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in the city.

Renowned British interior designer Anouska Hempel was at the helm of the design, drawing inspiration from Chinese, Malay and European cultures. Upon entering the hotel, guests are welcomed by large theatrical golden fans and strong hues of black, gold and yellow, layered with Oriental screens and calligraphy wallpaper from Hempel’s personal collection.

The 49 rooms and suites are “each designed with unique individuality for an exclusive experience every time” and feature amenities including a Naturalmat organic mattress, organic cotton bed linen by Beaumont and Brown and bathroom amenities by Etro.

Rajeev Menon, President, Asia Pacific (excluding China), Marriott International added:

“Singapore is one of the most important cultural hubs in Asia-Pacific, with a rich history and exciting local culinary scene. Guests staying at Duxton Reserve Singapore will be immersed in this experience through the unique design and excellent F&B offerings.”

Plum by Bent Chair, Bandra.jpg

Plum by Bent Chair, Bandra

Featuring equally quirky and bright décor is this kitschy restaurant, where literally everything’s on sale. This is the second outlet of Plum, which already has a presence in Kamala Mills in Lower Parel. Plum by Bent Chair serves pan-Asian food and an impressive range of cocktails but its USP is its quirky decor, furniture, and fixtures, all of which can be bought if you so fancy.
