Booking windows reflect confidence to plan ahead

Across the board, travellers are planning further ahead compared to the previous year, marking a return to traditional seasonality in 2024.

APAC: Amongst APAC travellers there is a greater distribution of booking windows compared to other regions but an overall increase in bookings over 30 days (including a 2% jump in the 90+ day segment). Booking windows of two months or more now represent over a third of demand in this region.

Destination choices highlight regional preferences

APAC: APAC travellers are turning their focus towards intra-regional destinations, with a notable decrease in trips to Europe compared to last year. Seat capacity is returning to the region and many travellers are indicating a desire to swap long-haul trips with short or medium ones, or even domestic trips with an eye on their budget to help keep costs down.

Trending destinations

Destinations with the biggest year-on-year increases in search volumes reflect a mix of wanting to explore new places, as well as those with new route connections.

APAC: New Delhi, India and Shanghai, China are experiencing the biggest growth amongst APAC travellers, while Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Dubrovnik, Croatia; and Victoria, Canada are also trending. Pangkalan Bun in Borneo, Indonesia is the only trending destination with an increase in average trip length.

Zeynep Mutlu Bigalı, Head of Destination Partnerships: “Our latest Horizon insights reveal a travel landscape that is both familiar and evolving. While traditional seasonality is returning and popular destinations remain in demand, travellers are also seeking value and exploring options closer-to-home. Across Skyscanner’s platforms we have seen incredible demand at the start of the year, and we expect this to continue as we head into the summer, especially in regions such as North Asia.”

At the start of 2024, Skyscanner saw record travel demand, outperforming the global flights market and was the fastest growing metasearch in 2023*.

Culinary Tourism: A Growing Trend in the Hospitality Industry - Haninder Sachdeva, Managing Director & CEO at Eight Continents Hotels & Resorts

In recent years, the landscape of tourism has undergone a flavorful transformation, with culinary tourism emerging as a prominent trend in the hospitality industry. Travelers are now increasingly seeking unique and authentic gastronomic experiences, turning their attention towards exploring the diverse and distinctive regional cuisines around the world. This shift in travel preferences has presented a golden opportunity for hotels and restaurants to tap into the burgeoning market of food-loving travelers.

In this article, let’s discuss the rise of culinary tourism and examines how the hospitality industry is strategically capitalizing on its unique regional cuisines to satiate the appetites of discerning tourists.

The Evolution of Culinary Tourism

Culinary tourism is not a new phenomenon, but its prominence and influence on travel choices have surged in recent years. Once considered a mere side attraction, food has now become a primary motivator for travelers when selecting destinations. This evolution can be attributed to several factors, including the rise of social media, globalization, and an increased appreciation for diverse culinary experiences.

Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook have transformed the way people share their travel experiences. Food-focused posts and reviews play a significant role in shaping the narrative of a destination, enticing others to explore the unique culinary offerings a region has to offer. As a result, travelers are no longer satisfied with merely sightseeing; they want to immerse themselves in the local culture through its cuisine.

Globalization has also played a pivotal role in the rise of culinary tourism. As the world becomes more interconnected, people are exposed to a myriad of culinary traditions and flavors. This exposure fuels curiosity and a desire to explore these diverse tastes firsthand, encouraging travelers to seek out destinations renowned for their authentic and traditional dishes.

How the Hospitality Industry is responding

Hotels and restaurants are quick to recognize the potential of culinary tourism, adapting their offerings and marketing strategies to cater to the evolving preferences of food-loving travelers. The key lies in capitalizing on the unique regional cuisines that define a destination, transforming them into a central element of the overall travel experience.

Culinary Partnerships and Collaborations

One effective strategy employed by the hospitality industry is fostering collaborations with local chefs and culinary experts. Hotels and restaurants are increasingly forming partnerships with renowned chefs or local cooking schools to create unique dining experiences that showcase the authentic flavors of the region. This not only enhances the culinary offerings but also adds a touch of exclusivity, making the dining experience a memorable and sought-after aspect of the overall travel package.

Culinary Events and Festivals

To further capitalize on the culinary tourism trend, many destinations now organize culinary events and festivals that celebrate their regional cuisines. These events draw both local and international visitors, providing a platform for hotels and restaurants to showcase their culinary prowess. Participating establishments often create special menus or host cooking demonstrations, creating a festive atmosphere that enhances the overall travel experience.

Culinary Tourism Packages

Raffles Hotel Le Royal Awarded Prestigious 4-Star Rating from Forbes Travel Guide

Raffles Hotel Le Royal, the luxury heritage hotel in the Cambodian capital, has earned a prestigious Four-Star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, whose designations are among the most highly sought after in the global luxury hospitality industry.

“Raffles Hotel Le Royal has been Phnom Penh’s defining word in opulence ever since its doors first swung open in 1929,” the guide’s inspectors wrote in their review of the hotel.

“It's still the go-to for Cambodian high society looking to host wedding banquets and celebratory balls, while the colonial wood-paneled Elephant Bar is a must for post-event drinks. This is also the best place in Phnom Penh to enjoy afternoon tea; the refined airs and immaculately attired staff practically transport you back in time,” it added.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal was one of only two hotels in Phnom Penh to be recognized by Forbes Travel Guide last month. The Four-Star rating denotes “exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.” Forbes Travel Guide, originally launched in 1958 (then as Mobil Travel Guide), is the oldest travel guide in the United States and the creator of the original Five-Star rating system for hotels.

The guide’s inspectors further praised Raffles Hotel Le Royal’s timeless elegance, saying, “While all accommodations [at the hotel] offer Old World luxury, the Landmark Rooms serve as a beautiful time capsule. The high-ceilinged rooms appear much as they did in 1929, including their enticing claw-foot baths.”

They also gave their highest approval to Restaurant Le Royal, the hotel’s signature Khmer fine-dining venue, calling it “one of the best meals in town.”

Raffles Hotel Le Royal features 175 rooms and suites that underwent a full refurbishment as part of a meticulous one-year restoration project in 2019.

“There is no greater honour for a hotel than to be recognized by Forbes Travel Guide. Our staff understand we are all caretakers of an incredible legacy in the Grand Dame of Cambodian hospitality, and we look forward each day to providing warm and attentive service to all of our cherished guests,” said Raffles Hotel Le Royal’s General Manager Dennis de Groot.

The Forbes Travel Guide designation adds to a growing list of awards for the historic property. In January, the UK-based Luxury Lifestyle Magazine named Raffles Hotel Le Royal one of the world’s best city hotels (No. 24 overall). Travel + Leisure named it one of the top city hotels in Cambodia last year. And it was voted the No. 1 hotel in Cambodia by readers of Condé Nast Traveler in its annual Readers’ Choice Awards the previous year.

Dynamic Pricing for Restaurants: Unpacking Growth in F&B Revenue Management

In recent years, the restaurant industry has witnessed a significant shift towards embracing technology-driven solutions to enhance operations and increase revenue. One such key strategy that has garnered attention is dynamic pricing, a practice commonly used in industries like airlines and hotels but has now made its way into the realm of food and beverage (F&B) establishments. Dynamic pricing refers to the practice of adjusting menu prices based on various factors such as demand, time of day, day of the week, and even weather conditions, with the aim of optimizing revenue and maximizing profitability.

Understanding Dynamic Pricing

Traditional pricing models in restaurants have typically been static, with menu prices remaining the same regardless of external factors. However, dynamic pricing introduces a more flexible approach, allowing restaurants to adapt their pricing in real-time to capitalize on changing market conditions. By leveraging data analytics and technology tools, restaurants can set prices dynamically to match supply and demand, ultimately driving increased sales and profitability.

Benefits of Dynamic Pricing for Restaurants

1. Maximizing Revenue:

Dynamic pricing enables restaurants to adjust prices based on demand fluctuations, ensuring that they are capturing the maximum revenue potential at any given time. For example, during peak hours or busy seasons, prices can be increased to capitalize on higher demand, while special promotions or discounts can be offered during off-peak times to attract more customers.

2. Enhancing Customer Loyalty:

By offering personalized promotions and discounts through dynamic pricing, restaurants can build stronger relationships with their customers. Customized pricing strategies can make customers feel valued and incentivize them to return, thereby increasing customer retention and loyalty.

3. Optimizing Inventory Management:

Dynamic pricing can also help restaurants better manage their inventory by aligning pricing with product availability. By adjusting prices based on inventory levels, restaurants can prevent overstocking or stockouts, leading to reduced waste and improved operational efficiency.

4. Competitive Advantage:

Restaurants that implement dynamic pricing gain a competitive edge in the market by being able to react quickly to changing market dynamics. By staying agile and responsive to pricing trends, restaurants can outperform competitors and secure a larger share of the market.

Challenges and Considerations

While dynamic pricing offers significant benefits to restaurants, there are also challenges and considerations to keep in mind when implementing this strategy:

1. Customer Perception:

One of the key concerns with dynamic pricing is how customers perceive frequent price changes. Restaurants need to communicate transparently about their pricing strategy to avoid any negative reactions from customers who may feel prices are arbitrarily being increased.

2. Data Accuracy:

For dynamic pricing to be effective, restaurants need access to accurate and real-time data on factors influencing pricing decisions. Maintaining data integrity and using robust analytics tools are critical to the success of dynamic pricing initiatives.

3. Regulatory Compliance:

Restaurants must ensure that their dynamic pricing practices comply with legal regulations and do not infringe on consumer protection laws. Pricing transparency and fairness are essential to building trust with customers and avoiding legal issues.

The Future of Dynamic Pricing in F&B

As the restaurant industry continues to evolve, dynamic pricing is expected to play an increasingly significant role in F&B revenue management. With advancements in technology, including AI-driven pricing algorithms and predictive analytics, restaurants can harness the power of data to make smarter pricing decisions and drive growth.

In conclusion, dynamic pricing offers restaurants a powerful tool to optimize revenue, enhance customer loyalty, and stay competitive in a rapidly changing market. By carefully considering the benefits, challenges, and best practices associated with dynamic pricing, F&B establishments can unlock new opportunities for growth and profitability in the years to come.

Experience Goa's 5 Cultural Festivities Alongside Shigmo

Celebrating Goan Culture in Vibrant Colors

Every year, as the winter bids farewell and spring tiptoes in, the vibrant state of Goa in India bursts into a riot of colors and festivities. This traditional Hindu festival Shigmotsav, marks the arrival of spring and is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm. The festival starting from 26th March to 8th April celebrated in every village and city, the entire state comes alive with cultural performances, float parades, music, and traditional dance during Shigmo.

As the colors of Shigmo paint the streets with exuberance, various other festivals prepare to showcase its diverse cultural heritage through a series of unique festivals. These festivals embody the essence of Goan traditions, each offering a distinct experience for travelers seeking to delve deeper into the soul of this coastal paradise. Witness a journey through five extraordinary festivals that add a splash of color and a dash of excitement to the festivities alongside Shigmo in Goa.

Xenni Uzzo in Molcornem Sanguem: Embracing Goa’s Fiery Ritual

Xenni Uzzo stands out as a thrilling fire ritual in South Goa. Annually, on the first full moon night following Shigmo, the village of Molcornem in Quepem, Goa, becomes the stage for a distinctive and age-old ceremony known as Xenni Uzzo. This ritual serves dual purposes: it honors the village's founding figures and beliefs while also commemorating the spring harvest festival.

Despite the rapid pace of modernization, the residents of Molcornem maintain a deep reverence for their traditional customs, particularly evident during Xenni Uzzo. Utilizing natural resources, such as dry cow dung cakes, locally termed as "Xenni," and leaves, they generate sparks, referred to as "uzzo," by striking these elements together. Encircling the resultant fire, villagers partake in spirited dances, while men transport areca nut tree trunks from carefully selected plantations near the Mallikarjun temple.

Ghode Modni in Thane, Sattari: A Spectacle of Horses and Warriors

Ghode Modni, meaning 'horse dance,' is a unique festival celebrated in the villages of Thane, Sattari and other places. This centuries-old tradition showcases a spectacular display of horsemanship and martial arts, with performers dressed as warriors riding decorated horses. The rhythmic sound of hooves and the colorful attire of the performers create a mesmerizing spectacle that captivates audiences. The Ghode Modni folk dance emerges as a significant highlight of the Shigmo festival, celebrated during the harvest season in Goa. Etymologically, "ghode" translates to "horse," while "modni" signifies "joyful," encapsulating the essence of the performance.

Chorotsav in Zarme: Unveiling the Charms of Goan Villages

Chorotsav, also known as the 'festival of thieves,' is a quirky celebration held in the village of Zarme in Sattari Taluka. This offbeat festival pays homage to the folklore of Goan villages, with locals dressing up as mischievous thieves and engaging in playful antics. From mock robberies to comedic performances, Chorotsav offers a lighthearted glimpse into the humor and creativity of Goan culture.

At the festival, four participants are buried with only their heads protruding, while another four have their heads submerged in pits. This symbolic act represents a tragic incident from centuries past when thieves were mistakenly executed. The spectacle draws a crowd of both locals and intrigued spectators, who observe with a mixture of fascination and anticipation as the eight individuals are interred alive.

Fiery Rituals of Homkund Utsav in Charao: A Spectacle of Devotion and Tradition

In the quaint village of Charao, nestled amidst the lush greenery of Goa, the Homkund Utsav takes on a fiery intensity, offering a unique spectacle of devotion and tradition. Here, amidst the tranquil surroundings, locals gather to perform age-old rituals that pay homage to their ancestors and seek blessings for prosperity and well-being.

The festival entails igniting a pyramidal stack of wood, typically measuring around five to six feet in height. Once the wood is reduced to smoldering ashes, local men and boys participate in a remarkable ritual, traversing barefoot across the scorching embers to the rhythmic accompaniment of traditional percussion instruments like the dhol, tasha, and cymbals. This spirited and mesmerizing event witnesses the participation of hundreds of individuals as they bravely tread upon the fiery path.

Shisha Ranni in Canacona: Where Devotion Cooks Blessings on Fire

Shisha Ranni is a traditional festival deeply rooted in Goan culture in Canacona. During this ritual, rice is cooked atop the heads of three Gades, which are humanoid representations of divinity on earth. Interestingly, the term 'Ranni' directly translates to 'stove,' emphasizing the central element of this ceremony.

In a remarkable display of devotion, three villagers from Canacona taluka's Gaondongorim voluntarily offer their heads as makeshift stoves for cooking rice over a wood fire.

From the colorful extravaganza of Shigmo to the quaint charm of village festivals, Goa offers a diverse array of cultural experiences for visitors to explore. Whether you're captivated by the pulsating beats of traditional music or tempted by the tantalizing flavors of Goan cuisine, these unique festivals promise to enchant and delight at every turn. So pack your bags, immerse yourself in the festivities, and embark on a journey of discovery through the vibrant tapestry of Goa’s culture.
