Japan’s First Caption by Hyatt Hotel Opens in Osaka

Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE:H) announced the opening of Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka, a dynamic, community-minded hotel in the heart of Osaka, Japan. The 167-room lifestyle hotel features self-activated touchpoints, vibrant social spaces, and a trendy design aesthetic with an unmistakable neighborhood feel.

Caption by Hyatt hotels offer a seamless and efficient guest experience that allows guests to customize interactions on their own terms. DIY touchpoints include self-service check-in, digital keys, Staycast streaming technology, hydration stations on every level, flexible co-working space, and lively social and food and beverage concepts.

In June 2022, the brand made its global debut with Caption by Hyatt Beale Street Memphis in the US. Most recently, Caption by Hyatt Zhongshan Park Shanghai opened its doors in China during April 2024 as the brand’s first introduction to the Asia Pacific region. Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka is expected to be followed by highly anticipated new Caption by Hyatt hotels in Ho Chi Minh City, Sydney and Tokyo in the coming years.

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Caption by Hyatt brand hotel in Japan in the heart of Osaka, bringing a brand that combines the design and comfort of a lifestyle hotel with the flexibility of a select-service property,” said Sam Sakamura, vice president, Japan and Micronesia, Hyatt. “Fostering community is a vital part of the Caption by Hyatt ethos and Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka will certainly play a key role in delivering on that within the vibrant Namba neighborhood. This debut will contribute to the growth of Japan’s tourism sector, while leading the way in facilitating stronger, more authentic social connections for all travelers.”

Ideally Located in the Heart of Osaka

Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka is situated in one of Osaka’s leading entertainment districts. Ideally located for exploration, the hotel is easily accessed from Kansai and Osaka International Airports and within walking distance of Nippombashi and Namba Metro stations, as well as two major railway stations.

Only a short walk to the world-famous canal-side entertainment district Dōtonbori—characterized by giant illuminated and mechanical signboards including the legendary Glico running man—and the more than 650-yard-long Kuromon Market dating back to the Edo era (1603–1868). Culture vultures will be enthused at their ability to walk to the National Bunraku Theatre—Japan’s headquarters for bunraku puppetry cited on Unesco’s ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ list—as well as Osaka Shochikuza Theatre, and Namba Grand Kagez, the hub of comedy culture.

Talk Shop: Intentional Social Space that Encourages Connection

As guests arrive at Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka, they will enter ‘Talk Shop’, a reimagined arrival experience unique to the brand. Talk Shop is a lively area with an all-day lounge, workspace, coffee shop, eatery, grab-and-go artisanal market, and cocktail bar all rolled into one. Locals and hotel guests alike are invited to dine, work, socialize, and curate their own experiences.

Hosting creative workshops, open mic music nights, pop-up installations, and book clubs, Talk Shop will be the heart of the hotel, and exude the energy of Namba’s community.

Talk Shop events include:

  • Japanese Kitchen Knives History and Production: Osaka is known as the 'kitchen of the nation'. Learn about the production process and history of traditional Japanese kitchen knives from the craftsmen of a 70 years-old knife shop in the Sennichimae Doguya-suji shopping arcade.

  • Food Sample Making Workshop: Originated in Osaka, food sample making goes back 100 years. The food sample making workshop will consist of learning the traditional techniques from craftsmen from the Sennichimae Doguya-suji shopping arcade.

Locally Inspired Design

On arrival, guests are greeted with a welcome drink with soy milk from a 100-year-old tofu shop in Kuromon Market. A knowledgeable Caption by Hyatt emcee is on hand to support guests with self-service check-in, directions, or recommending local must-sees and dos.

Guests can check-in via the World of Hyatt app and head straight up to one of the hotel’s 167 rooms using a digital key. Inside, guests will discover a playful, thoughtfully designed 215–322-square-foot space curated with form, function, and fun top of mind.

The bold colors and locally inspired art running throughout the hotel creates an environment that is vibrant, unexpected, and has plenty of personality. Large picture windows frame views of the city’s most dynamic district, while hardware inspired by samurai swords, kikkō (tortoiseshell) and yagasuri (arrow feather) patterns, and graphic illustrations of Japanese kimonos, emakimono (handscrolls), and kinchaku (drawstring pouches) are subtle nods to traditional Japanese artwork. Above the beds, guests will encounter energetic murals by Osakan artist ZAnPon, inspired by Kuromon Market and its lively scene attracting customers. In the colorful, utilitarian-style bathrooms, clued-up guests will delight in the mural spelling out “nandeyanen”—an iconic Osakan retort meaning "What the heck?” or “You’re kidding.”

Other facilities include 24-hour Fitness Center and Coin Laundry located on the 2F, open around the clock.

Striving to Be a Good Neighbor: Community and Sustainability

The Caption by Hyatt brand aims to expand the definition of wellness to include a sense of belonging, providing a platform for community, and reflecting the neighborhood in which its hotels are situated. Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka endeavors to be a part of the Namba community by hiring locally and partnering with local vendors and organizations.

Sustainability is a focus in the hotel’s operating model. Fridges are stocked with locally sourced ingredients, and initiatives like not using single-use plastics, the use of bulk amenities in the bathrooms, and hydration stations on every floor and in public spaces — all have been implemented with sustainability in mind.

“We are excited to introduce the Caption by Hyatt brand and its belief in caring for people and community to one of Japan’s most dynamic locations,” said Shintaro Fukuda, general manager, Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka. “Our vibrant walls reflect the variety of perspectives and experiences our guests will bring to Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka, and our hope is for them to make the hotel their own.”

A real-time check on to be or not to be!!!

The word accidental is quite a touching one and has been through our mind and system a couple of times earlier as well. The fact of the matter is that our industry is a highly performance oriented one which calls for not just physical fitness, grooming standards, language barriers, unexpected expectations of guests, clients and more. What needs to be looked at is the passionate uncompromising attitude and a willingness to make a difference.

My own experience of 25 years now has been a real to eye witness of some people who passed ways, crossed lanes and stayed on the same platforms etc who in my opinion were a complete mis fit as a part of the hospitality & culinary operations. Looking back two and a half decades things and time was so very different and diverse.it was never easy to start anything new and being a part of a new system always has its pros and cons. Being a people’s profession here we are expected to have next levels of patience factor, understanding nature and humility with empathy towards one another.

Over the years, we have observed that people who wish to attain success and be known in this industry have somewhere been influenced by a number of things and not to forget social media. Today if you ask someone like a aspiring culinary professional, what is your aim in the next 3 years approx. in the industry the reply would be-a sous chef or a head chef with a branded property with several perks and benefits! I do not wish to anyway turn down the motivated candidate but after having a healthy discussion with my fellow colleagues, chefs and hoteliers, human resource managers etc we somehow did not feel very convinced with the reply. Though it does depend on performance, appraisals all through the way and hotel expectations etc a candidate must also realise and be a little wiser in giving replies in order to get the conversation going ahead and be able to lead to a starting point correctly matched, well valued and perfectly gauged.

Here are a few points which one must keep in mind when it comes to making a successful & promising career in the hospitality industry.

  1. BE GROUNDED IN YOUR ASPIRING AIMS: fresh aspiring to be professionals graduating from esteemed hospitality management institutions across the country should always keep in mind that achieving success is not an overnight task, it is a process which takes its own due course of time. Hence let us not try to look for short cuts and jumping the ladder up strategies.

  2. BE REALISTIC IN WHAT YOU EXPECT: It has been observed that fresh graduates in today’s times are a little not too sure of how and where they wish to start their career. At times they get through a particular hotel and are still not satisfied with the offer letter since they heard something unpleasant from somewhere about the place etc. also do not confuse yourself with multiple offer letters to start your first job. Be wise!

  3. PEER ADVICE - NOT THE BEST ADVICE: Students today feel more comfortable in picking on advice and help from peers and they feel that that is the best way to get the replies to their confusions and queries. Experience is the key and which should not be ignored. Nothing can beat experience of a person hence make a better choice on whom to go up to and get the support.

  4. SOCIAL MEDIA SUPPORT – DOUBLE CHECK: Since I come from the classic era when we didn’t have social media etc it was a different world all together for us. We did better quality reading in studies, spending time in the libraries making notes and getting our queries resolved by our valued teachers who were everything to us in helping us shape our careers. We would not hesitate to walk up to them with a bunch of questions to get the real answers etc same way social media can be a good platform to get your replies but one should connect with experienced people as well.

  5. VOICE YOUR QUERIES IN ADVANCE: To some graduating students the real world and hotel industry seems like a new training centre, where they will go daily and sit down in a classroom and ppt shows will be presented etc. the industry on the other hand has ever since been clear that we need people who are tough, and can withstand pressure and carry out tasks effectively. This gap needs to be filled up perfectly well in order to have a smooth flow as a part of the industry. Ask questions, clarify your doubts, reach out to us and check with us with are the possibilities etc before taking the leap.

  6.  FOCUS ON THE FEASIBILITY & NOT FEAR: Students across the country have been reaching out to me over the years now and some of the most commonly put-up queries include that what is the scope for growth in the industry? What is the possibility or being stable? Are there chances that we can be asked to leave after a set tenure or so? What if I don’t get the desired results from my work place after I complete my 1 year or probation period etc. My reply to all the above has been the same which says keep your focus on your goal and not in short term visions. You need to do your best every single day at work and prove your abilities, skills & talent to the people there. If one can see that you are a good performer why would a hotel or a company want to lose an asset?

  7. GIVE YOUR 100 PERCENT ALWAYS: easy to say this line and motivate everyone around but yes that’s how it is. One needs to be self-motivated in our industry. You cannot keep waiting for someone in the team, seniors etc be there when you want and praise you every hour, day and week. Trainers and human resource professionals too shared the same with me when it comes from the industry perspective, you have to keep some part of your personal life on the side and offer your services without hindrances and distractions in order to achieve the motto of the hotel or property from revenue generation to customer satisfaction!

  8. DO NOT TAKE CRITICISM TO HEART: Feedback and Criticism are 2 elements which should be taken on a very constructive note and for self-improvement. The very fact that we as humans are not perfect at all we need to be open to ideas, views and opinions for doing better not just at our place of work being our dharma which should create good karma but also in our personal life as well. There are good days & bad days in the lives of everyone but with a little calm, cool and composed mindset we can conquer all such negativities and turn them into positive energy and use it to the best of our capacities.

  9. CHANGE IS ALL THAT IS CONSTANT- ACCEPT IT: A simple line to write and share but ends up complicating a lot of people and their careers. It is important to self- introspect on the word Change! It is imperative, can’t be avoided, cannot be escaped from and is not worth going against. In a highly unpredictable world in which we are living today, we cannot guarantee what is going to happen the next minute or day or week hence it is for us to think practical and go with the flow at times and do not complain against the odds and evens which are not matching your horoscope or stars. We all have come up in our life accepting change as it sees the good and betterment for us.

  10. IT IS OK NOT TO BE OK SOMETIMES: Each one of us is ultimately a human being and there are times in our life when situations and roleplays fall out in such a way that we start struggling in between the mind and the heart. Both of them have a different frequency and therefore it is not necessary that it has to be always a bingo or agree factor. There are days when we just want to pull back a little bit, take a break from our highly physically and mentally strenuous professional life, taking a break or a leave is no crime! But the fact of the matter remains about the proper timing & feasibility which would not affect the work and the organisation on the whole. Balance is the word and make sure that you don’t shift your focus from work and in the bargain the no of days not worked ratio exceeds no of days worked.

On a Concluding Note: Every industry and profession have a few pre-requisites and attributes which a candidate must possess before entering into it and it also happens at times that our mind and heart might agree on it but the real-world rejects. It is very close to the quote Man proposes- God disposes! All of us must do a proper homework- research and speak to experienced people before taking up a highly competitive, challenging & glamourous profession of which we at times only witness the front picture and not the hard work that goes behind to make it happen!

Cathay and Singapore Airlines to collaborate on sustainability initiatives

June 2024, India:  Cathay and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a broad range of sustainability initiatives. These collective efforts are aimed at advocating for the development and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Asia-Pacific region, a critical decarbonisation lever for the sector, and sharing best practices to boost sustainability performance.

The MoU was signed by Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Ronald Lam and Singapore Airlines CEO Mr Goh Choon Phong in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on the sidelines of the 80th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit.

The agreement, which focuses on two key areas, underscores both carriers’ commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and affirms their aspiration to help drive sustainability changes in the airline industry.

Firstly, Cathay and SIA will jointly advocate for the greater use of SAF in the Asia-Pacific region. Initiatives in this area will include raising public awareness about SAF’s critical role in decarbonising aviation, advocating for supportive policies in the region, and promoting the creation of a standard global accounting and reporting framework to ensure the transparency and verifiability of emission reductions from the use of the fuel. The airlines will also explore potential opportunities for joint procurement of SAF at selected locations. These are aimed at boosting SAF production and supporting its wider adoption in the airline industry.

The second area of focus will be the exchange of best practices to reduce single-use plastics, minimise waste, and improve energy efficiency in ground and cargo operations. This will allow Cathay and SIA to improve their sustainability performance and speed up the development and implementation of sustainable solutions in their operations.

Mr Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer, Cathay Group, said: “As part of our collaborative ethos of ‘Greener Together’, we actively seek like-minded industry leaders for strategic partnerships in transitioning to sustainable aviation. Our collaboration with Singapore Airlines aims to accelerate and support the development of the SAF supply chain in the region, fostering a reliable SAF ecosystem to enable the industry to achieve its long-term decarbonisation goals. Cathay was one of the first airlines in Asia to set a target of 10% SAF for its total fuel consumption by 2030, and we are undertaking a multi-pronged approach to contribute to the aviation industry’s transition towards a greener future.”

Mr Goh Choon Phong, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Airlines, said: “Singapore Airlines is committed to embedding sustainability in all aspects of our operations. At the same time, we recognise that we cannot achieve our targets alone. Our partnership with Cathay signifies our mutual ambition to enhance collaboration in sustainability initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region. Together we are helping to set the foundation for a more sustainable aviation industry, and ensure that future generations continue to reap the benefits of air travel.”

EXPERT OPINION | Why should students pursue education and hospitality despite the recent dip in the industry? by Shivani Arora

Fundamentally, hospitality revolves around human connection. The Latin word hospitalitis, which describes the relationship between a guest and a host, is actually where the word hospitality originated, and its importance in both business and education has only grown.

While the past year was tough for all industries alike, the way hospitality industry operates, and education is imparted, has been reshaped. There's never been a better moment to seize the opportunity and join an industry poised to enter the next major stage of development.

All other industries are inextricably linked to the hospitality sector. It's critical to comprehend the skills that students who seek hospitality education will acquire before I respond to your questions about why they should. As I frequently emphasize, hospitality management is a humane approach to conventional business education. And that's precisely what sets this course apart from others, along with the chances it offers.

Contrary to popular belief, a degree in hospitality provides doors for employment in nearly every field. The hospitality industry is not just about hotels and restaurants. Students are well equipped to work in industries like travel and tourism, banking & finance, real estate, consulting, luxury lifestyle & retail, event management and so many more.

In fact, a lot of students decide to go on and become successful entrepreneurs in their chosen field of interest. The unique quality of hospitality education is in its emphasis on human capital. This course is unique because of the ‘transferrable skills’ that students acquire, even though the curriculum includes modules on finance, marketing, economics, human resource management, strategy, law & ethics, entrepreneurship, and other business essentials.

These are skills and traits that stay with students throughout their professional and personal lives, and across industries, no matter what career path they opt for. In fact, according to predictions made by the majority of business periodicals, candidates will stand out for their soft skills, which include problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.

Given a choice between two equally eligible candidates, recruiters are always going to choose an employee which ranks higher on soft skills and emotional intelligence. These transferrable skills are a great asset to one's current skill set and have a significant impact on one's career path. Real-world learning is a significant advantage of a hospitality education. The theoretical as well as the practical aspects of learning are stressed equally.

With the help of case studies, industry narratives, and historical and contemporary organizational models, students can apply theory to real-world situations through this type of industry immersion.

In order to create space for a better, more sustainable, and more productive tomorrow, they are taking lessons from the past. Although there are many opportunities in education, it's also critical that students arrive prepared and with the appropriate attitude.

Individuals that possess creativity, the ability to think and act unconventionally, or a strong desire to become tomorrow's leaders are ideal candidates for this kind of training. I would argue that, as the consumer-industry ecosystem develops, the importance of the service has surpassed that of the product. People are found wherever there is experience, and there is a dramatic change occurring worldwide from products to experiences.

Additionally, education has a lasting value since, in situations when others are having difficulty, hospitality advances thanks to transferable skills that accumulate over time. What will the job market be like in five or ten years? Nobody knows for sure. What we do know is that some skills particularly in industries like hospitality where human interaction is the Unique selling proposition, will remain in high demand, while others will become obselete.
