The Role of AI in the Hospitality Industry by Dr. Shailendra K Rai

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the hospitality industry by enhancing guest experiences, streamlining operations, and driving profitability. From personalized services to predictive maintenance, AI is becoming a vital tool for hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality businesses. Here’s a look at how AI is revolutionizing this sector.

1. Enhancing Guest Experiences

Personalized Recommendations: AI algorithms analyze guest preferences and behaviors to offer personalized recommendations for dining, activities, and services. For example, AI can suggest a specific type of cuisine based on a guest's past dining choices or recommend nearby attractions.

Virtual Assistants: AI-powered virtual assistants like chatbots and voice-activated devices are available 24/7 to assist guests with inquiries, bookings, and service requests. These assistants can handle a wide range of tasks, from room service orders to providing local information, thereby improving the guest experience and freeing up staff for more complex tasks.

Sentiment Analysis: AI tools can analyze guest reviews and social media mentions to gauge sentiment and identify areas for improvement. This real-time feedback allows hotels to address issues promptly and enhance overall guest satisfaction.

2. Streamlining Operations

Efficient Booking Systems: AI enhances the booking process through dynamic pricing, availability management, and personalized booking experiences. AI-driven systems can adjust prices in real-time based on demand, competition, and other factors, ensuring optimal occupancy rates and revenue.

Housekeeping and Maintenance: Predictive maintenance powered by AI can foresee when equipment or infrastructure might fail, allowing for proactive repairs. This minimizes downtime and reduces the likelihood of service disruptions. AI can also optimize housekeeping schedules based on guest check-ins and check-outs, ensuring rooms are ready promptly.

Inventory Management: AI algorithms help manage inventory by predicting demand for food, beverages, and other supplies. This reduces waste, ensures availability, and helps in maintaining cost-effective operations.

3. Driving Profitability

Revenue Management: AI-driven revenue management systems analyze vast amounts of data to forecast demand and set optimal room rates. These systems consider various factors, including booking patterns, local events, and market conditions, to maximize revenue.

Marketing and Sales: AI can segment customers based on their preferences and behaviors, allowing for targeted marketing campaigns. Predictive analytics help in identifying potential high-value customers and tailoring offers to them, thus boosting sales and loyalty.

Staff Management: AI optimizes staff scheduling based on predicted occupancy rates and guest needs. This ensures that the right number of staff is available at the right time, enhancing efficiency and reducing labor costs.

4. Future Trends

Robotics: The use of robots in hospitality is on the rise, with robots performing tasks such as room service delivery, cleaning, and concierge services. These robots can work around the clock and handle repetitive tasks, allowing human staff to focus on more personalized guest interactions.

Facial Recognition: AI-powered facial recognition technology is being used for seamless check-ins, security, and personalized services. This technology can identify guests as they arrive, streamlining the check-in process and providing a personalized welcome.

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR): AI, combined with AR and VR, can offer immersive experiences to guests. For instance, guests can take virtual tours of hotel rooms before booking or experience local attractions virtually, enhancing their overall experience.

Conclusion

AI is rapidly becoming an indispensable tool in the hospitality industry, driving innovation and efficiency. By leveraging AI, hospitality businesses can provide personalized guest experiences, optimize operations, and increase profitability. As technology continues to evolve, the integration of AI in hospitality will only grow, further transforming the way this industry operates and serves its guests.

MAST to create stilt-house hotel in abandoned Portuguese salina

Danish maritime architecture studio MAST has revealed plans to build a hotel formed of houses on stilts in a Portuguese lagoon formerly used for salt production.

Located on the Sado Estuary near Setúbal, the overgrown salina will be transformed into an eco-conscious tourist destination that takes cues from the traditional fisherman's huts and jetties common to lagoons and rivers in the south of Portugal.

Construction is expected to begin imminently, with the first houses scheduled to open to guests in late 2025.

Guests can check-in via the World of Hyatt app and head straight up to one of the hotel’s 167 rooms using a digital key. Inside, guests will discover a playful, thoughtfully designed 215–322-square-foot space curated with form, function, and fun top of mind.

The bold colors and locally inspired art running throughout the hotel creates an environment that is vibrant, unexpected, and has plenty of personality. Large picture windows frame views of the city’s most dynamic district, while hardware inspired by samurai swords, kikkō (tortoiseshell) and yagasuri (arrow feather) patterns, and graphic illustrations of Japanese kimonos, emakimono (handscrolls), and kinchaku (drawstring pouches) are subtle nods to traditional Japanese artwork. Above the beds, guests will encounter energetic murals by Osakan artist ZAnPon, inspired by Kuromon Market and its lively scene attracting customers. In the colorful, utilitarian-style bathrooms, clued-up guests will delight in the mural spelling out “nandeyanen”—an iconic Osakan retort meaning "What the heck?” or “You’re kidding.”

Other facilities include 24-hour Fitness Center and Coin Laundry located on the 2F, open around the clock.

Striving to Be a Good Neighbor: Community and Sustainability

The Caption by Hyatt brand aims to expand the definition of wellness to include a sense of belonging, providing a platform for community, and reflecting the neighborhood in which its hotels are situated. Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka endeavors to be a part of the Namba community by hiring locally and partnering with local vendors and organizations.

Sustainability is a focus in the hotel’s operating model. Fridges are stocked with locally sourced ingredients, and initiatives like not using single-use plastics, the use of bulk amenities in the bathrooms, and hydration stations on every floor and in public spaces — all have been implemented with sustainability in mind.

“We are excited to introduce the Caption by Hyatt brand and its belief in caring for people and community to one of Japan’s most dynamic locations,” said Shintaro Fukuda, general manager, Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka. “Our vibrant walls reflect the variety of perspectives and experiences our guests will bring to Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka, and our hope is for them to make the hotel their own.”

Alma’s Herbert Laubichler-Pichler named Vietnam’s Best General Manager

A hospitality veteran with life-long experience making guests feel welcome at hotels and resorts in Asia and Europe has been recognized as “Vietnam’s Best General Manager” in the prestigious “Travel + Leisure Luxury Awards Asia Pacific 2024”.

Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, Hong Kong & Macau readers deemed Herbert Laubichler-Pichler, who has been at the helm of 30-hectare resort Alma for five years and worked and lived in Vietnam since 2008, the country’s best general manager. He received the accolade last night at an awards ceremony in Bangkok.

“Austria-born Herbert Laubichler-Pichler is the hospitality life-timer at the helm of Cam Ranh’s Alma―a 384-suite resort with 14 food and drink outlets and 12 beachfront swimming pools. Having worked across Vietnam’s best hotels for nearly 18 years, the industry veteran brings together leadership, vast experience, and local cultural familiarity to showcase Vietnamese hospitality at its finest,” Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, Hong Kong & Macau’s website states.

Laubichler-Pichler, who, in addition to Alma, has managed some of the country’s most acclaimed hotels including the Nam Hai in Danang, The Reverie Saigon and The Anam Cam Ranh, said he was thrilled to receive the recognition but wanted to share it with the resort’s “hugely supportive” owner and “exceptional” team at Alma.

“I am so thankful for the privilege to work with such a genuinely supportive owner and talented team of hospitality professionals at Alma, who tirelessly work day in and day out; our staff members are our greatest ambassadors and obviously play a crucial role in the guest experience,” he said

Born into a hotelier family, Laubichler-Pichler started out in the industry working at his parents’ guesthouse in his native Austria as a bellboy at 10 years of age during the summer season. He later studied hotel management at the Hotel and Catering College Schloss Klessheim and became a certified chef before steadily rising through the ranks to become the general manager at properties in Austria, Germany and Cyprus. He also studied an Executive MBA in Hotel and Tourism Management with Chur University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland.

Readers of Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, Hong Kong & Macau also voted Alma in the top five of the “Best Hotel Pools in Vietnam” category.

Alma is home to an awe-inspiring host of world-class facilities including 12 swimming pools that cascade down to the beach, an eclectic range of restaurants helmed by leading chefs, a science museum and a 6000sqm water park with a lazy river, wave pool and water slides.

Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, Hong Kong & Macau said of the awards: “Taking in the hospitality industry in 15 countries and territories as well as the travel industry more broadly across Asia-Pacific, the Travel+Leisure Luxury Awards winners for 2024 reflect the ballots of you hotel guests, frequent fliers, cruise-lovers, points guys, and wellness junkies, and highlight the places and people that make for the best high-end wanderlust. With so many tried, trusted and true hotels getting your votes, and well as the slew of new openings in the region and ideas in luxury hospitality percolating out there, we’ve put together a special print edition: The Hotels Issue 2024.”

Avani Debuts in the Netherlands with the Opening of Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam

Avani Hotels & Resorts, the upscale lifestyle brand of Minor Hotels, continues its European expansion with the launch of Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam. Housed in a refurbished mid-century building in the heart of the city’s museum district, the 163-room canal-side property offers a relaxed stay for both business and leisure travellers, as well as access to some of Amsterdam’s most unique experiences through a series of innovative partnerships.

Where Art Meets Comfort

The hotel’s design is inspired by Stedelijk Museum’s expansive collection, blending the avant-garde and the traditional to create modern, inviting interiors. Brick, a prominent material in Amsterdam, adds a touch of the city’s architectural identity to the gleaming glass façade. Inside, clean lines and practical furniture pay homage to functionalism and rationalism, while mirrors and polished surfaces echo the city's tranquil canals. The geometric patterns and block colours of the carpets, tiles and soft furnishings are inspired by the works of renowned 20th century artists, including Piet Mondrian, Anni Albers, Gunta Stolzl and Sophie Taeuber, completing the artistic fusion within the design.

Room to Recharge

Avani’s spacious guest rooms and suites are inspired by the 1960s, with warm hues of terracotta, mustard yellow and deep browns, referencing the muted tones of Amsterdam. Spread over seven floors, some with panoramic windows, they come with modern comforts and amenities. After exploring the city’s sights or a day of meetings, guests can kick back with Chromecast TV, practice asanas on in-room yoga mats or drift off to a podcast with high-quality Bluetooth speakers. Drinks and bites are available 24/7 and include healthy, fresh and satisfying options, while the around-the-clock AvaniFit gym comes equipped with cardio machines for a quality workout. For outdoor exercise, Vondelpark is conveniently nearby, offering excellent routes for a run or walk.

Avani Eats

On the hotel’s ground level, an airy lobby lounge opens into The Pantry, Avani’s grab-and-go dining concept. In the morning, the vibrant space serves up a delicious buffet breakfast of local pastries, hot dishes made à la minute, healthy snacks, vegan bites and smoothies. During warmer months, guests can enjoy the outdoor terrace overlooking a leafy interior courtyard and indulge in local bites and sweet treats.

City Experiences

Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam has partnered with the city’s movers and shakers to curate tours that showcase Amsterdam’s playful side. Created in partnership with influencer and founder of Girls Who Magazine, the dynamic Street Art Tour invites guests to explore Amsterdam’s scenic neighbourhoods while hunting for street art, map in hand. In summer months, wellness minded guests can paddle through the city’s canals with Canal SUP, stopping to refuel with pizza and craft beer before cooling off at a local swim spot. Avani guests can experience the latest in wellness trends with THIS.IS.EDEN. Founded in Amsterdam, they combine dance with meditation, set to an electro soundtrack that is delivered through individual headsets in a “silent disco-style” setup. Held outdoors in Amsterdam's picturesque parks, on rooftop terraces or inside clubs, these sessions allow guests to shift focus from the mind to the body through dynamic movement techniques.

Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam is just steps away from some of the city's most renowned cultural landmarks: Rijksmuseum, showcasing Dutch art and history; the Van Gogh Museum; and the Stedelijk Museum, known for its avant-garde art and inspiring design collection. Guests can access the bustling PC Hooftstraat shopping street and the vibrant De Pijp neighbourhood, both a five-minute walk away. Amsterdam Central Station is easily reachable within ten minutes by taxi and for business travellers, the RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre is a 25-minute walk.

Opening rates start from €195 per room, per night based on two people sharing, including breakfast. For more information and to book, please visit avanihotels.com, email museumquarter@avani-hotels.com or call +31 20 573 8200.
