Residence de l’Evėché Opens its Doors, Inviting Guests to Experience the Charm of Pondicherry’s French Quarter

The meticulously restored 200+ year-old private villa is managed and operated by CGH Earth, the brand spearheading the responsible tourism narrative in India.

January 2024: Residence de l’Evėché, CGH Earth, a historic landmark nestled in the heart of Pondicherry’s French Quarter, has announced its opening this month. Dating back to the 1790s, the restored single-key private villa promises to take guests on a journey back in time to the bygone French era of the region.

Located strategically on Rue de l’Evėché, surrounded by quiet lanes, stunning boutiques, quirky stores, eclectic eateries, and popular tourist landmarks, this intimate and elegant 3-bedroom home makes for a perfect serviced-villa experience for families and a small group of friends.

“Our aim is to showcase Pondicherry’s rich heritage from a more personal space for our guests. We carefully chose this villa for its location and fascinating history – it is located on a street that once housed the archbishop’s home. The house had several owners, one of them being the prominent Goubert Family after whom the popular Goubert Market is named”, muses Mridula Jose, Vice President of Product Development and Marketing at the renowned hospitality brand, CGH Earth that manages and operates Residence de l’Evėché. Known for its commitment towards sustainable and responsible tourism, preservation of history via design and architectural aesthetics is a part of the brand’s DNA.

The villa’s pastel pink façade, bright indigo door and location on a street where vibrant bougainvillea cascades the compound walls, stunningly capture the essence of the old-world charm and French architectural influence. Stepping inside the 200-year-old home, the whitewashed walls create a surreal backdrop to period furniture, combined with refurbished interiors of colonial grace. Artworks adorn the walls of the living and dining areas, and a magnificent blue staircase ascend to other rooms. While 2 spacious bedrooms are accompanied by private balconies, the other one has a quaint private terrace, all offering immersive views of the French Quarter. Guests can also take the capsule lift installed within the house to access upper levels.

In true CGH Earth signature-style, food remains a key highlight of local cultural offerings and experiences at Residence de l’Evėché. Therefore, a chef-on-call from the CGH Earth’s kitchens is available to wield popular and regional delicacies from the distinctive Franco-Tamilian cuisine, personalized and customized as per guests’ preferences.

Additionally, at a short distance away from the villa’s picturesque street lies the famous Promenade Beach with the Sacred Heart Basilica, Old Lighthouse, and Aurobindo Ashram. A trip to Pondicherry remains incomplete without a visit to the experimental utopian township, Auroville. The team at the Residence de l’Eveche can also arrange insightful heritage walks for a better understanding of the stories encapsulated in the French and Tamil Quarters.

McDonald's India - North and East takes a unique approach to sustainability, repurposes OOH Campaign Material into school bags for kids

New Delhi, January 2024: - As a commitment to bringing in sustainability and community involvement across each of its functions, McDonald's India- North and East in its latest initiative has taken a step ahead by repurposing its out-of-home marketing material into school bags for kids. The initiative is conceptualized and executed in collaboration with OMD India with the goal of reducing plastic waste.

Faced with the global plastic pollution crisis, brands all over the world are working to reduce plastic waste. McDonald’s India North and East leads the way in creating out-of-home advertising and recognises that billboard vinyl, which is made of non-biodegradable polymers, contributes significantly to plastic waste.

Speaking on this initiative, Rajeev Ranjan, Managing Director, McDonald’s India - North and East, stated, "Our sustainability efforts are focused on keeping communities clean, protecting the planet for future generations, and supporting our long-term business resilience. We continuously explore avenues to reduce waste, transition to more sustainable materials, while simultaneously making a meaningful contribution to communities. The repurposing of billboard materials into school bags exemplifies our dedication to achieving both of these goals in an innovative and impactful manner. This endeavour not only marks a significant stride for us toward strengthening sustainable practices but also underscores our dedication to creating a significant positive impact within our communities."

Discussing the campaign, Anisha Iyer, CEO of OMD India Team, expressed her delight, “As people’s mindsets increasingly shift from a consumerist approach to one that's more conscious and intent-driven, advertising’s focus on sustainability gets stronger than ever. We see Happy Bags as not just a campaign but a heartwarming step towards sustainable practices for McDonald’s. Channelling the Indian spirit, we're pleased to be emphasizing the need for innovative approaches to driving social and environmental impact.”

By partnering with the NGO Child Survival India, McDonald's has successfully distributed over 2000 upcycled bags to children aged 5 to 18 years. The campaign unlocked a unique opportunity to infuse joy and spread happiness among children who truly need it. In a striking fusion of style and utility, the bags boast a design that effortlessly blends functionality with vibrant aesthetics, serving as a practical asset for school-going children and a reminder of the positive change achievable through conscious, sustainable efforts.

While being an interesting school supply and a unique utility for kids heading back to school, the initiative serves as a constant reminder of the good that can be accomplished through deliberate and long-term efforts. Through this initiative, the brand advances its goal of decreasing waste and promoting a sustainable culture, thereby, creating a long-term positive impact in the communities it serves.

The Rise of Cold Plunge Tubs: A Luxurious Health Trend in Hotels

In recent years, a new trend has been making waves in the hospitality industry - the cold plunge tub. Once reserved for elite athletes and spa enthusiasts, cold plunge tubs are now becoming a staple in luxury hotels, offering guests a unique and rejuvenating experience. But what exactly are cold plunge tubs, and what health benefits do they offer?

Understanding Cold Plunge Tubs

Cold plunge tubs, also known as cold immersion or ice baths, are small pools filled with cold water, typically maintained at temperatures between 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 13 degrees Celsius). Unlike hot tubs or saunas, which promote relaxation and muscle relief through heat, cold plunge tubs use cold water to provide a different set of health benefits.

Health Benefits of Cold Plunge Tubs

Muscle Recovery and Pain Relief

One of the primary reasons cold plunge tubs have gained popularity is their ability to aid in muscle recovery and alleviate muscle soreness. Athletes often use cold immersion therapy to reduce inflammation, prevent muscle damage, and speed up the healing process after intense physical activity.

Improved Circulation and Immune Function

The shock of cold water causes blood vessels to constrict, which can help improve circulation and overall cardiovascular health. Additionally, the exposure to cold water may stimulate the immune system, leading to potential benefits for overall immunity.

Mental Well-being

Many individuals tout the mental health benefits of cold immersion, citing improved mood, reduced stress, and increased alertness after a cold plunge session. The invigorating experience of submerging oneself in cold water can be an effective way to reset the mind and improve mental clarity.

The Emergence of Cold Plunge Tubs in Hotels

As the demand for wellness-focused travel experiences continues to grow, luxury hotels are integrating cold plunge tubs as part of their wellness amenities. These establishments are recognizing the appeal of offering guests access to unique and holistic wellness services, and cold plunge tubs fit perfectly into this narrative.
Hotels are positioning cold plunge tubs as a premium amenity, often complementing existing spa facilities or fitness centers. This trend represents a shift towards providing guests with more comprehensive wellness offerings, catering to individuals seeking rejuvenation and self-care during their stay.
To enhance the overall experience, some hotels are incorporating additional elements such as chromotherapy lighting, aromatherapy, or stunning outdoor settings for their cold plunge tubs, creating a truly immersive and luxurious wellness experience for guests.

Closing Thoughts

Cold plunge tubs are not just a passing trend but a reflection of evolving consumer preferences for holistic wellness experiences. As hotels continue to adapt to the growing demand for wellness-focused amenities, it is likely that cold plunge tubs will become a standard feature in luxury properties, offering guests a refreshing and invigorating way to promote their overall well-being.
Whether it's for muscle recovery, stress relief, or the exhilarating sensation of taking a plunge into icy water, cold plunge tubs are demonstrating their value as a luxurious and health-enhancing addition to the hotel experience. As travelers increasingly prioritize wellness during their stays, the integration of cold plunge tubs signifies a new era in luxury hospitality, where physical and mental rejuvenation are at the forefront of the guest experience.

Wellness Tourism: A Growing Segment in the Hospitality Market, by Vinesh Gupta, General Manager of The Den Bengaluru

There is no denying the fact that the past few years have taken a toll on our health. From long hours working from home to taxed immune systems combating COVID-19, the pandemic has left many individuals and businesses drained, including the hospitality sector. However, with the new normal, many trends and segments have come to the fore, and wellness tourism is no exception. In recent times, the demand for wellness tourism has grown dramatically and is expected to develop further. Here, to highlight the fact, according to Mordor Intelligence, the India wellness tourism market is poised to grow to $24.94 billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 6.45% during the forecast period (2023–2028).

Wellness Tourism: A growing trend

Wellness tourism has been quite a popular word in the hospitality industry for the past few years, thanks to the pandemic, taxing life routines, and work commitments. But what is wellness tourism? To give the answer, it is the powerful interaction of two growing billion-dollar industries: tourism and wellness. In fact, wellness tourism refers to travel focused on wellness activities and services, allowing the individual to revitalize their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Whether it is indulging in spa treatments, attending yoga retreats, or experiencing nature, wellness tourism provides a getaway from the mundane routine while encouraging general health and peace.

Today, millions and millions of travelers are expecting hotels to be more conscious of and receptive to this trend by offering a range of wellness amenities and services. From state-of-the-art fitness centers to healthy dining options and mindfulness programs, hotels are adapting to cater to the growing demand for wellness-focused experiences. Therefore, by embracing this trend, modern hotels not only attract a new segment of travelers but also contribute to the overall growth of the wellness tourism industry.

Furthermore, as more hotels adopt wellness tourism, a ripple effect occurs in the industry, pushing other businesses to follow suit and eventually contributing to a more health-conscious and attentive society. So, let’s delve into the key factors fueling the expansion of wellness tourism, a rising part of the hospitality industry.

Key factors: Driving the growth of the sectors

Desire for personal development and self-discovery: Many travelers are looking for experiences that promote personal growth and self-discovery. They are looking for activities, such as yoga retreats, meditation workshops, and wellness seminars, that will help them acquire a sense of inner calm and self- improvement. As a result, today, to meet the demands of these individuals, new-age hotels are not only providing comfortable lodgings but also offering a variety of wellness-focused services.

Health-conscious consumers: The increased awareness of the necessity of living a healthy lifestyle is a fundamental driver of the wellness tourism boom. As more individuals prioritize their health, hotels are capitalizing on this demand by providing customized wellness programs and services that cater to the needs of health-conscious consumers. As a result, to accommodate this expanding demand, hotels are incorporating wellness components into their services.

Stressful modern lifestyles: Without a doubt, today, the modern lifestyle has led to an increase in stress-related health issues such as anxiety and burnout. As more people acknowledge the negative effects of stress on their health, they are on the hunt for ways to relax and revitalize. This is where hotels are offering wellness services and programs for those wishing to get away from the stresses of everyday life, contributing to the expansion of wellness tourism in the hospitality industry.

All things considered!

In a nutshell, offering guests a varied choice of cultural activities, such as traditional spa treatments and wellness routines, can considerably improve their overall hotel experience. And hotels that incorporate real, immersive experiences into their offerings not only help guests connect with local cultures and traditions but also improve their well-being and relaxation while they are there. In fact, as the need for distinctive and engaging travel experiences grows, embracing the new-age trend will set the brand apart and provide guests with lasting memories. As a result, now is the time to embrace the trend and adapt to changing guest demands to not only improve visitor’s overall experience but to the long-term prosperity of the hospitality sector.
