Empowering Women: Overcoming Challenges in the Hospitality Sector by Haninder Sachdeva, CEO, Eight Continents Hotels & Resorts

In the realm of hospitality, women have long played a pivotal role in shaping guest experiences, managing operations, and driving innovation. Yet, despite their significant contributions, women continue to face unique challenges within the industry. From limited opportunities for advancement to persistent gender biases, navigating these obstacles requires resilience, determination, and a collective commitment to empowerment. In this article, we explore the challenges women encounter in the hospitality sector and discuss strategies for fostering inclusivity, promoting leadership opportunities, and empowering women to thrive in this dynamic field.

Understanding the Challenges

The hospitality industry encompasses a wide array of sectors, including hotels, restaurants, event planning, tourism, and more. Historically, women have been concentrated in certain roles within these sectors, such as housekeeping, front desk operations, and administrative positions. While these roles are essential to the functioning of hospitality businesses, they often lack the visibility and prestige associated with leadership positions.

One of the primary challenges facing women in the hospitality sector is the pervasive gender bias that can hinder their career advancement. Stereotypes about gender roles and abilities can influence hiring decisions, promotion opportunities, and workplace dynamics. Women may encounter unconscious bias during recruitment processes, performance evaluations, and team interactions, which can undermine their confidence and limit their professional growth.

Furthermore, the hospitality industry is known for its demanding schedules and fast-paced environment, which can present additional hurdles for women, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities. Balancing work and family commitments can be especially challenging in roles that require long hours, irregular shifts, and frequent travel. Without adequate support systems in place, women may find it difficult to achieve work-life balance and pursue career progression.

Despite these challenges, women in the hospitality sector are forging ahead, breaking barriers, and redefining traditional roles. Organizations and industry leaders have a crucial role to play in creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for women to thrive. This involves implementing policies and practices that promote gender equality, diversity, and inclusion at all levels of the organization.

Empowering Women: Strategies for Change

One strategy for empowering women in the hospitality sector is to provide mentorship and professional development opportunities. Mentoring programs can pair women with experienced leaders who can offer guidance, support, and career advice. By fostering meaningful connections and sharing insights, mentors can help women navigate challenges, build skills, and advance their careers within the industry.

Additionally, investing in leadership development programs can help women cultivate the skills and competencies needed to succeed in leadership roles. These programs can provide training in areas such as strategic thinking, decision-making, communication, and team management. By equipping women with the tools and resources they need to excel, organizations can help them overcome barriers and reach their full potential.

Another key aspect of empowering women in the hospitality sector is promoting diversity and inclusion in recruitment and hiring practices. This involves actively seeking out diverse candidates, eliminating bias from job descriptions and interview processes, and creating a welcoming and inclusive workplace culture. By embracing diversity, organizations can tap into a broader talent pool, foster innovation, and better reflect the diverse needs of their guests.

Furthermore, advocating for policies that support work-life balance and flexibility can help women juggle their professional and personal responsibilities more effectively. This can include offering flexible scheduling options, telecommuting opportunities, and parental leave policies that accommodate the needs of employees at different stages of life. By prioritizing employee well-being and flexibility,

organizations can attract and retain top talent, including women in the hospitality sector. Beyond organizational initiatives, industry-wide collaborations and advocacy efforts are essential for driving systemic change and addressing the root causes of gender inequality in the hospitality sector.

This can involve partnering with industry associations, educational institutions, and government agencies to promote gender diversity, advocate for policy reforms, and raise awareness about the importance of gender equality in the workplace.

Summing- Up

While women in the hospitality sector face various challenges, they also possess tremendous resilience, talent, and potential. By recognizing and addressing the barriers that women encounter, we can create a more inclusive, equitable, and empowering environment where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive. Through mentorship, professional development, diversity initiatives, and advocacy efforts, we can harness the full potential of women in the hospitality sector and drive positive change within the industry. Together, we can build a future where women are valued, respected, and empowered to lead in the dynamic world of hospitality.

4 Tips to Attract & Retain Gen Z Employees By Mark Lewis-Brown, CEO & President of Zucchetti North America

The hospitality industry is no stranger to evolution, and after surviving the chaos of the COVID pandemic and the aftermath, hoteliers are much more adept at pivoting as new trends and developments push the hospitality industry in new directions. 2024 has already ushered in a great deal of change, as consumer booking trends change and many of the top global economies experience contractions, but as always, there will be many other shifts that will impact the hospitality industry over the coming years; one of the most significant changes that we are currently experiencing comes with the entry of Gen Z into the workforce, which requires hoteliers to take a fresh look at both their management and operational strategies.

Here's why…

As “digital natives,” Gen Z have grown up with the internet, which impacts their view and use of technology, and has cultivated an expectation for immediacy, efficiency and connectivity in all aspects of their lives. This is important for hoteliers to understand and act upon, especially during our ongoing staffing crisis. By better understanding the needs and expectations of this large group of potential employees and adapting accordingly, you can improve your perceived value as an employer (increasing hiring opportunities) and increase employee retention.

So, what can your property do to attract and retain more Gen Z employees?

Embrace Operational Technology to Empower Gen Z Employees to Work More Efficiently

Gen Z employees are used to using technology, both at work and in their personal lives. While COVID empowered many hoteliers to embrace operational technology to help them do more with less staff, and adapt to changing guest expectations, the adaption rate of technology in the hospitality industry is still very low – and this can be a detractor for Gen Z employees when considering entering the hospitality industry.

Today, it is essential hoteliers embrace the future, replacing manual processes with time-saving automated technology solutions, which will improve productivity and operational efficiency, and maximize revenue opportunities. From streamlined booking engines to AI-powered revenue management systems, embracing technology that aligns with Gen Z's digital fluency will not only make your property more attractive for Gen Z employees, but it will also improve your property’s operational efficiency and the guest experience.

Redefining Workplace Culture

To get the most from your Gen Z employees your property should re-evaluate your workplace culture and management styles, as this generation has very different preferences than older generations and to improve employee retention, hoteliers need to be aware of this and adapt accordingly. Gen Z employees value transparency, flexibility, being empowered to make independent decisions and look for opportunities for growth and development. Hospitality leaders must create an inclusive environment that exemplifies these values, offering clear career pathways and incorporating flexible working arrangements to attract and retain Gen Z employees.

Sustainable Businesses are More Attractive to Gen Z Employees

In the hospitality industry, sustainability is transitioning from a niche selling point to a standard industry practice and Gen Z employees are looking for their employers to follow suit. Gen Z are more environmentally conscious than other generations, and so hotels must adopt sustainability practices in their operations and guest experience and, where possible, also in the design and construction of their facilities, aiming for minimal environmental impact. This holistic and comprehensive sustainability mindset will make your hotel more attractive to potential Gen Z employees, as they want to work for a company that they believe in.

The Blurring Lines Between Work and Leisure

Since COVID, "bleisure" travel (trips that combine both business and leisure travel) has become very popular. Because Gen Z employees prioritize flexibility and a healthy work/life balance, this is a trend that hoteliers need to be conscious of as their Gen Z employees will appreciate being offered the opportunity to take bleisure trips or work remotely when possible. This flexibility can also go a long way towards recruiting the top Gen Z talent and retaining current employees.

Gen Z’s digital-first approach, along with their values around sustainability and work/life balance, are already playing a crucial role in shaping the future of the hospitality industry. To remain competitive in hiring and retaining top Gen Z employees, hotels must be open-minded and quick to adapt to meet the demands of tomorrow's employees; as Gen Z is the largest generation globally, adapting to appeal to Gen Z employees is an operational imperative, especially given today’s ongoing staffing shortage.

Lyla: A new Mexican-Californian inspired cocktail bar makes its debut in BKC, Mumbai

Mumbai, 2024: Set in the heart of the city’s buzzing commercial district, BKC, this Mexican and California-inspired cocktail bar by Chrome Asia Hospitality, which has in its portfolio restaurants such as Gigi, KAIA Goa, Donna Deli and Eve, is set to be the next new hotspot for discerning patrons. Drawing inspiration from the vibrancy of Central America with a California soul, the space features an amalgamation of native Indian, Afro-Latin and Spanish design accents, fused with plenty of natural materials and vivid pops of colour. Spread over a massive 4,500 sq. ft. Lyla makes for a chic casual dine spot transitioning effortlessly into a cocktail bar by evening. Come for the vibe, the food, and drinks with a delicious twist! Chrome Asia Hospitality launches its latest F&B venture, Lyla, helmed by trio Pawan Shahri, Dhaval Udeshi and Nikita Shahri

The Interiors

As you walk in, you’re greeted by the large, wood cladded island bar that’s a focal point of the space and a conversation starter—perfect for a night out or simply unwinding with some post-work drinks. A rich colour palette dominates the space, punctuated by statement murals, relaxed seating and patterned floors. Quirky lampshades, lacquered tables and artfully mismatched furniture make up some of the other design accents. The confluence of objets d’art, textiles and botanicals lends itself well to the breezy setting. The restaurant design is inspired by the colorful mood and atmosphere of Central America, and features al fresco seating as well.

The Food and Drinks

With its fun, easy-going vibe, patrons are encouraged to drop by for tequila and mezcal drinks and cocktails paired with delicious bites such as California-style tacos, burritos, salads and punchy ceviche. Chef Beena Noronha has drawn inspiration from Californian-Mexican eateries with a menu that transitions from light lunch eats to heartier fare that pairs perfectly with the cocktails. “Most of what we see in the city is Tex-Mex food. So, we’ve tried instead to do a mix of Mexican and Californian cuisine that reflects the restaurant’s vibrant atmosphere, along with flavours that diners are familiar with. I’ve spent a lot of time reading, researching and trying out different recipes. For the business lunch crowd, we have kept easy, light bites such as cobb salad or a vegan cottage cheese steak made with watermelon seeds. We’ve done churros with a savoury twist and also sloppy burgers with Mexican flavours.”

Some of the signature dishes include a Red Snapper Ceviche, Grande Nachos, Seven Layer Cobb Salad, and traditional Tortas or Mexican sandwiches, apart from the classic chimichangas, tacos, cubanos and burritos. End the meal with indulgent desserts like Monster Churro with salted caramel ice cream and chocolate sauce, Pina Colada Creme Brûlée and Tres Leches soaked in horchata milk.

The cocktail menu draws inspiration from the dual Gold Rush, first when the Spanish Navies landed in Mexico and gave the world treasures in the form of chocolate, mangoes and more and the Californian Gold Rush that changed the face and fortunes of the peninsula forever. "Lyla’s drinks program gets a whole new dimension, the likes of which Mumbai hasn’t seen so far. Especially curated by Priyanko Sarkar, a spirits journalist and judge known for his storytelling-focussed bar takeovers until now, this is the first time his signature cocktails will be pouring in the city. With a strong focus on history, Lyla’s  drinks are a testament to the fabled stories of Mexico and California.

Signatures Include:

Dive into La Dorado, a picante with mango and avocado instead of typical spices. Or the Kahwen, a cocktail with a hint of coffee and chocolate that will keep you guessing for more.

The refreshing Baja Blast is sure to transport you to the Californian coast while Querida, meaning beloved, is the perfect date night cocktail for long conversations. Try Reina de la Sur, a herbaceous drink with rosemary and gin or go for Maya Meets Lyla, a spirit forward drink that will set you up for the day.

Round the night off with Gold Rush, a pineapple and pepper cocktail with tequila and the quirkily named Cali Peeli, a Paloma cocktail that brings you back to Mumbai with the special addition of kokum.

With its array of delicious signature cocktails highlighting spirits and ingredients from California and Mexico, Lyla promises to become your favourite new drinking spot in the city.

Pawan Shahri, co-founder of Chrome Asia Hospitality adds, “We’re thrilled to launch another F&B concept in BKC. It's a neighbourhood we know well and have a lot of experience in. Lyla has been a passion project for us all and we can’t wait for guests to savour delicious Mexican food, cocktails and the overall atmosphere, plugging the gap for a signature all-day bar in the area.”

Introduction of Almond Flour:

Almond flour, also known as almond meal, is made from finely ground almonds. It's a popular gluten-free alternative to wheat flour and is rich in nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamin E, and healthy fats. Almond flour adds a nutty flavor and moist texture to baked goods and is a versatile ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes. It's commonly used in low-carb and paleo diets and is a great option for those with gluten sensitivities.

Origin Of Almond Flour:

Almond flour, made from finely ground almonds, is a gluten-free alternative rich in nutrients like protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Its exact origin is unclear, but almonds are believed to have originated in the Middle East and Central Asia. Almond flour has been used for centuries in various cultures, particularly in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, and is popular today in gluten-free and low-carb diets for its versatility and nutritional benefits.

Health Benefits Of Almond Flour

Almond flour offers several health benefits. Additionally, almond flour is gluten-free, making it a great alternative for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

Uses of Almond Flour In Indian Kitchen

Almond flour is not traditionally used in Indian cuisine, but it can be incorporated into Indian dishes in various ways, especially in modern, health-conscious cooking. Here are some common uses:

1. Gluten-free Rotis and Parathas: Almond flour can be combined with other gluten-free flours like sorghum or buckwheat to make rotis or parathas.

2. Baked Goods: Almond flour can replace part or all of the wheat flour in recipes for cakes, cookies, and muffins, adding a nutty flavor and moist texture.

3. Coatings and Binders: Almond flour can be used as a gluten-free coating for fried foods or as a binder in dishes like cutlets or meatballs.

4. Thickener: It can be used as a thickening agent in curries and sauces, providing a nutty flavor and thick consistency.

5. Desserts: Almond flour can be used to make traditional Indian sweets like ladoos or barfis, offering a healthier alternative to refined flours.
