Tourism and Hospitality sector seeking 680-million dollar aid package from province

According to the Tourism Association of BC, over 100-thousand jobs in the sector have been temporarily or permanently lost due to the pandemic.

The sector is seeking a 680-million dollar stimulus recovery package from the BC Government.

Chairperson, Vivek Sharma told Vista Radio businesses are facing some increased costs after re-opening.

“Any businesses that have re-opened has had to do at a significant cost to change the way they do business bringing in barriers, personal protective equipment, and implementing ways of doing contactless operations, all of that comes at a cost.”

Sharma added several businesses have been ravaged because of COVID-19.

“Ten percent of our restaurants have closed permanently and another 50% are expected to close if they don’t get any assistance. Hotel occupancy has been down about 65% for June over previous years.”

“We need to get strategic on how we aid industry now and when we came up with this amount we broke it down into three categories so that we know how the aid is required.”

The three components are:

A Working Capital Recovery Grant ($475 million) to help sustain and maintain solvency for businesses that have prospects to return to profitability in the medium term (i.e. 18 months). This could include the provision of low or no-interest loans with an extended payback period. As the timing and magnitude of out-of-province visitors are uncertain, the immediate priority would be to sustain businesses that normally rely on these visitors and generate significant revenues for the visitor economy, as well as businesses that play central roles in attracting visitors to a community or a region.

Support for Adaptation Costs ($190 million) that would provide funds to help businesses adapt their operations to the health and safety requirements of COVID-19 and protect their workforce, visitors, residents, and local communities; and develop innovative ways of delivering tourism experiences to augment and accelerate recovery.

Support for Developing Resilient, B.C.-focused Supply Chains ($15 million). The goal would be to support industry subsectors (accommodation, attractions, transportation, food services, and retail) refocus their supply chains and forge new relationships with B.C. suppliers, to create supply chains that will not only promote recovery over the next 18 months but also contribute to the industry’s resilience going forward.

Destination BC’s projection for this year is a 69% decline in tourism revenue from the $20.4 billion generated in 2018 to $6.7 billion in 2020.

Hotel chains and industry analysts are cutting back on their growth forecasts for the current quarter and are witnessing a dip in occupancies and revenues this month following the Coronavirus outbreak with both business and leisure trip cancellations coming in by inbound travellers and future bookings getting stalled.“Indian High Commissions in South east Asian countries – China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea have restricted visas to travellers coming from these countries. Although India doesn’t have a lot of Chinese travellers but with all these countries included in the travel restriction bracket – the impact on hotel demand could be significant throughout quarter one of 2020,”

“The Chinese have a lot of influence in sectors like infrastructure, telecom, mobile manufacturing. They are not coming. Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan are down. Because of them, the outbreak and global advisories, overall business travel is also down. Conferences and exhibitions are getting hampered,” he added.

A lot of destination weddings planned for Thailand, or Sri Lanka, and countries in the far east have shifted back to India. Destinations like Udaipur have benefitted

Chains like IHCL, Marriott, and Accor did not respond to emails seeking comments till the time of going to press. Hilton and Hyatt declined to comment.

In an earnings call this month, Michele Allen, CFO of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts which has a sizeable presence in China said 70% of the chain’s hotels in China remain closed with the balance experiencing occupancy declines of approximately 75%.

Hyatt's Commitment to India's Thriving Hospitality Sector

Expanding into new territories is key to our robust growth plans, creating differentiated experiences for our guests is also central to our brand philosophy

According to a World Economic Forum 2019 report, India ranks 34th in the world travel and tourism competitiveness index.

Our journey in the country began over three decades ago, with the launch of Hyatt Regency Delhi in 1983

Today, eight brands of Hyatt operating within the country - Andaz, Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Centric, Hyatt, Hyatt Place and Alila, India stands third only to the US and China in Hyatt’s global pipeline.

We also introduced two Alila properties - Alila Diwa Goa and Alila Fort Bishangarh (Jaipur) as part of our global acquisition of Two Roads Hospitality.

Recently, we announced the opening of Hyatt Regency Thrissur and Hyatt Regency Dharamshala resort, which join 11 hotels under the Hyatt Regency brand in India

In 2020, Our growth plans in India are in sync with this dynamic shift. We plan to open 11 new hotels in India across Hyatt brands and be where our guests are traveling our presence in emerging business, leisure and cultural destinations such as Alibaug, Udaipur, Jaipur, Dehradun, Digha, Trivandrum, Vijaywada, and Vadodara.

Hyatt has an app that offers guests several functionalities which include but are not limited to searching, selecting and booking rooms at any of our Hyatt hotels. Our app and our tech-friendly hotel services have strengthened our guest relationships and contributed to impressive successes and achievements for Hyatt in India.

We have a Leadership Talent Exchange Program that supports our experiential learning objectives and provides innovative ways to challenge and motivate employees.

Our global program RiseHY aims to provide youngsters from less privileged backgrounds with the opportunity and training to create a career for themselves in this industry and our hotels

Our 2020 water goal is to reduce water consumption per guest night by 25% compared to a 2006 baseline, and by 30% in water-stressed areas.

Hyatt Regency Delhi also opened an in-house water bottling plant
