We maintain Indianness while designing hotels yet retain the contemporary look: Vandana Saxena

Vandana_Dhawan_Saxena.jpg

"Design Innovation to Conservation" Series. The fifth-panel discussion of the weBBlast series themed, ‘Design for every style & need’, was moderated by Bobby Mukherji, Chairman, Bobby Mukherji & Associates.

Delineating her thoughts, Vandana Dhawan Saxena stated, “India, as you know, is very rich and diverse and seeing that something is Indian could have multiple connotations. When I study vernacular architecture to the depths of what Indianness means, there were a lot of intelligent steps that were taken in the olden times and of course, it got carried on as traditions and became a part of our culture. If we go down to the basics of what Indian designs meant, we will be able to develop more meaning in our design. If we go down to the core principle of what Indian is, we will be able to challenge and create or innovate in a better way.”

“Besides that, there are other ways one can incorporate Indianness in contemporary design, I think we should go down to the basics of using local materials like incorporating linens into our guest rooms, probably having local craftsmen embroider the cushion covers. If we go down to studying each region and incorporating those elements in our design, then we will really be able to create unique identities in the hotel projects that we are able to build. So, the key to design is multi-functionality and creating diversity,” Vandana Dhawan Saxena further added.

As part of a panel discussion on the future of hotel design as hotels reopen in the midst of the pandemic, she also maintained, “I am a follower of design than trends. But trends drive a lot of what we see today. Guests want to be engaged more than what hotels offer today. The way we design today is changing as per what the guest wants. Bathroom fixtures are becoming a point of celebrations. Shower experience is as important as sleep experience. There’s a lot of intelligence in what was done in earlier times and it has become a part of our tradition. If we go down to study core of the Indian design, we will be able to innovate and create unique identities in hotel projects keeping the look of the space very contemporary.”

Taj-Mahal,-New-Delhi---The-All-New-Machan-1.jpg

The iconic Taj Mahal, New Delhi  has unveiled the new avatar of the Capital’s original and much-loved dining destination Machan.

The hotel also reopened to an elegant new lobby and the Emperor Lounge after a stylish makeover. Taj Mahal, New Delhi has been under extensive renovation since July 2019, reinventing itself to offer the essence of timelessness and heritage of Lutyens’ Delhi, coupled with contemporary flair and impeccable service the hotel has been renowned for.

The next phase of the transformation will include the redesigned rooms and The Chambers – expected to be completed by end of the year. Machan, the international dining destination has been a defining part of the city’s culinary landscape for many decades.

With a state-of-the-art air purification technology for reduction of particulate matter and mitigation of microbes, Machan offers an environment with heightened safety and hygiene protocols. The Emperor Lounge that has been the centre of many conversations and high-powered business meetings returns with elevated style and novel culinary offerings.

With the refreshed Machan and Emperor Lounge, the hotel welcomes its guests once again to relive their old memories and create new ones. With inspired and warm service, the Hotel promises to delight the gourmands of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Satyajeet Krishnan, Area Director – North and General Manager, Taj Mahal, New Delhi said, “The Taj Mahal, New Delhi remains an ideal location with exquisite dining choices. Marriott to expand, continue food delivery biz even after COVID-19

Leading hotel chain Marriott International, which has seen its business plunge over 90 percent across its 123 properties since the lockdown, will expand and continue it’s delivery and takeaway business even after the pandemic-induced lockdown and social distancing end, as it does not see normalcy turtling back anytime soon.

As the lockdown was extended four times, the hotel explored newer options and landed upon the idea of home delivery of food under a new vertical ''Marriott on Wheels'' and soon it roped in food delivery chains Zomato and Swiggy and is keen to continue and expand this model in the long term.

On May 13, Marriott, in a novel initiative, tied up with food delivery firm Swiggy as part of expanding the Marriott on Wheels delivery service, offering over 20 hotels.

Why the Wusthof Classic Chef's Knife is my last chef's knife

I still, remember the moment I cut something for the first time using a really sharp knife. The Wusthof Classic 8-inch chef’s knife was a wedding gift I got almost 15 years ago. I sliced tomato with it while preparing a BLT sandwich and lo and behold: There was no squishing involved and the tomato, though now separated in two, maintained its structural integrity. That’s when I understood why chefs and food writers are always campaigning against dull blades. In the years since, I’ve used a host of different knives while cooking dinners for my family, making cookies for events and testing recipes for two cookbooks I’ve written. And one thing I’ve discovered is that, in a pinch, I could always make do with just one good knife:

Wustohf Classic Chef’s Knife

It’s versatile enough to carve up a pineapple for a summer barbecue and make quick work of a handful of fresh herbs from our garden. It’s the knife I keep reaching for again and again, even as my collection has grown.

Tripadvisor quietly tests consumer-to-travel agent service Reco

Tripadvisor over the last few months, work has commenced on a new platform to connect consumers to "travel designers" who will plan and book their trip.

The service, known as Reco, works on both desktop and via a smartphone app for Apple devices, giving travelers access to a portfolio of agents for a $199 fee each time.

Travelers select dates for a trip, length of stay, type (getaway, festival, reunion, cruise, etc.), budget range, interests and "vibe" (romantic, spiritual, chill, etc.) and then Reco offers a range of matches to agents with expertise in those areas.
